CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN WHO THOUGHT HE WAS UNTOUCHABLE

Emiliano Aranda had spent fifteen years building an image.

Not a career.

An image.

Because careers could disappear.

But a reputation?

A reputation could protect a man even when the truth was standing right in front of everyone.

That was what he believed.

Every morning, he walked through the halls of Santa Regina Clinic knowing exactly what people saw.

The brilliant doctor.

The compassionate husband.

The future director of one of the most prestigious medical institutions in Mexico.

Patients cried when he entered their rooms.

New mothers thanked him for bringing their children safely into the world.

Television hosts called him:

"The doctor who gives families their happiest moments."

Nobody saw what happened after the cameras turned off.

Nobody saw the man who locked doors.

Nobody saw the man who whispered threats.

Nobody saw the rage hidden behind the expensive suits.

Except Valeria.

And now...

Teresa.

The ultrasound room became painfully quiet.

Emiliano adjusted his gloves, pretending nothing had changed.

"Valeria, why don't you tell your mother that you're just nervous because the surgery is approaching?"

His voice was gentle.

Too gentle.

A stranger would have believed him.

But Teresa saw the way Valeria's shoulders tightened.

She saw the fear in her daughter's eyes.

"Tell her," Emiliano repeated.

Valeria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Teresa stepped forward.

"She doesn't need to explain anything."

Emiliano looked at her.

For the first time, he stopped pretending.

"Mrs. Teresa, this is a private matter between my wife and me."

Teresa smiled.

A calm, almost polite smile.

"You’re right."

She looked around the room.

"Which is why I’m surprised you decided to discuss it in a clinic full of cameras and witnesses."

The doctor's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Teresa saw it.

He was afraid.

Not of her.

Of what she knew.

"You’re making accusations without evidence."

Emiliano's voice became colder.

"I could have you removed from this clinic."

Teresa looked at him.

"Could you?"

The question was simple.

But it landed harder than a scream.

Emiliano frowned.

"What did you say?"

Teresa walked toward the window.

She looked down at the luxurious entrance where wealthy families entered every day.

Then she said quietly:

"I said, could you?"

She turned around.

"Because according to the foundation agreement that created this maternity wing, you are not the owner."

A pause.

"You are only the administrator."

The color disappeared from Emiliano's face.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Valeria looked at her mother in confusion.

"Mom..."

Teresa didn't look away from Emiliano.

"Your husband forgot to tell you something."

Emiliano forced a laugh.

"Don't listen to her."

But Teresa continued.

"This entire maternity department exists because my foundation funded it twelve years ago."

Silence.

"The building."

"The equipment."

"The medical expansion."

"Even the research programs."

She took one step closer.

"Everything."

Emiliano stared at her.

Impossible.

That was the only word in his mind.

Impossible.

Because Teresa had spent years making herself invisible.

She wore simple clothes.

She drove an ordinary car.

She lived in a modest house.

She never attended elite business events.

She never showed wealth.

Why?

Because she had learned something long ago.

The most dangerous people in the world are not the ones who show power.

They are the ones who don't need to.

"You're bluffing."

Emiliano finally said.

Teresa reached into her purse.

She placed a folder on the table.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

The way someone places down a final piece on a chessboard.

Emiliano looked at the documents.

His eyes moved across the pages.

Then stopped.

His breathing changed.

Because at the bottom of the contract was a signature.

His signature.

Years ago.

When he was young.

Ambitious.

Desperate for funding.

He had signed everything without reading.

The clause.

The conditions.

The authority agreement.

All of it.

Teresa watched him realize the truth.

"You never cared about the details."

She spoke softly.

"You only cared about having your name on the door."

Emiliano clenched his jaw.

"You think this changes anything?"

His voice became dangerous.

"You think a piece of paper scares me?"

Teresa didn't answer.

Because she already knew.

Men like Emiliano didn't understand consequences until consequences arrived.

Then the door opened.

A nurse entered.

She looked nervous.

"Doctor Aranda..."

Emiliano turned.

"What?"

"The medical board called."

His expression changed.

"What did they say?"

The nurse swallowed.

"They requested access to all surgical records from the last five years."

The room froze.

Valeria looked at her mother.

Teresa remained silent.

The nurse continued:

"And they specifically requested information regarding emergency complications during C-sections."

Emiliano's eyes moved toward Valeria.

Slowly.

Too slowly.

And Valeria understood.

He knew.

He knew something was happening.

He knew someone had started investigating.

"Who contacted them?" Emiliano asked.

The nurse hesitated.

"I don't know."

Teresa smiled.

"I do."

Emiliano looked at her.

"Who?"

Teresa leaned closer.

"The same person who will make sure my daughter walks into that operating room safely."

A moment passed.

Then Emiliano whispered:

"You."

Teresa said nothing.

Because silence was an answer.

That night, Emiliano didn't go home.

He stayed inside his private office.

The same office where he had celebrated every promotion.

Every award.

Every victory.

But now the walls felt smaller.

He opened his computer.

Checked his emails.

Hundreds of messages.

Most were normal.

Until one appeared.

URGENT: Administrative Suspension Pending Investigation

His hands tightened.

Impossible.

He clicked.

Then another email arrived.

Legal Notice: Foundation Authority Activated

Then another.

Temporary Removal From Surgical Responsibilities Effective Immediately

For the first time in years...

Dr. Emiliano Aranda couldn't control the situation.

And that terrified him.

But he was not ready to lose everything.

Not yet.

At midnight, Emiliano opened a hidden drawer in his office.

Inside was a small black notebook.

A notebook nobody knew existed.

Not his assistants.

Not the clinic.

Not even Valeria.

Inside were names.

Dates.

Payments.

Secrets.

Because Emiliano had always believed one thing:

If he ever fell...

He would take everyone down with him.

He flipped through the pages.

Until he found the name he wanted.

Teresa Salgado.

Underneath it was a note:

"The mother-in-law knows more than she should."

He smiled.

A cold smile.

"Fine."

He closed the notebook.

"If she wants a war..."

He whispered.

"I'll give her one."

The next morning, Valeria woke up to hundreds of messages.

But one message made her blood run cold.

It came from an unknown number.

Only six words.

"Your mother should have stayed quiet."

Valeria dropped the phone.

Because she finally understood something.

The fight was no longer about exposing Emiliano.

It was about surviving him.

And somewhere inside Santa Regina Clinic...

The man who was supposed to save lives was preparing his cruelest move yet.
