CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE BABY

The phone fell from Valeria’s hand.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The silence inside the foundation’s conference room felt heavier than any scream.

Teresa watched her daughter’s face lose all color.

"Who was it?"

Valeria looked at her mother.

Her lips trembled.

"I… I don't know."

But Teresa knew.

That wasn't true.

Her daughter knew something.

Something she was afraid to say.

"Valeria."

The young woman looked down.

"It was someone from the clinic."

"Who?"

A long pause.

Then she whispered:

"The nurse who assisted Emiliano during my last appointment."

Rafael, the foundation lawyer, immediately stood.

"The same nurse who disappeared from the schedule yesterday?"

Valeria nodded.

"She said Emiliano wasn't just trying to hurt me."

Her voice became weaker.

"She said he was hiding the truth about Isabella."

The room went silent.

Teresa looked at her daughter.

"What truth?"

Valeria shook her head.

"I don't know."

But Teresa saw it.

The fear.

The confusion.

The pain.

Her daughter wasn't only afraid of Emiliano anymore.

She was afraid of what she might discover.

Three months earlier...

Valeria still believed she had the perfect marriage.

At least, that was what everyone saw.

Emiliano was handsome.

Successful.

Respected.

When they walked into restaurants, people recognized him.

When he introduced Valeria, he always smiled proudly.

"My wife is giving me the greatest gift of my life."

Everyone admired him.

Everyone except the person who knew him at home.

The first time he pushed her, he apologized.

He cried.

He said he was stressed.

The second time, he bought her expensive jewelry.

The third time, he blamed her.

"You make me lose control."

And slowly...

Very slowly...

Valeria started believing him.

That was the most dangerous part.

Not the bruises.

Not the threats.

The manipulation.

Because Emiliano didn't only hurt her body.

He attacked her confidence.

He convinced her that nobody would believe her.

That nobody would choose her over him.

Until one night changed everything.

Valeria remembered that night clearly.

She was seven months pregnant.

She had woken up because Emiliano was talking on the phone.

She wasn't trying to listen.

She simply couldn't sleep.

Then she heard him say:

"After the surgery, everything will be clean."

Her heart stopped.

"What surgery?" the person asked.

Emiliano lowered his voice.

"The C-section."

Valeria froze.

He continued:

"Once the baby is born, nobody will question anything."

The call ended before she heard more.

But that sentence stayed with her.

"Once the baby is born..."

Why?

Why did he say it like that?

Like Isabella was part of a plan?

Back in the foundation office, Teresa grabbed the file.

"Find the nurse."

Rafael nodded.

"We already tried."

"And?"

"She vanished."

Teresa looked at him.

"People don't disappear without help."

Everyone understood what she meant.

Someone powerful was protecting Emiliano.

Someone with access.

Someone inside.

That evening, Emiliano arrived home.

But something was different.

The house was dark.

Usually Valeria waited for him.

Usually she asked about his day.

Usually she tried to keep peace.

Not tonight.

He walked into the living room.

And saw her sitting there.

Waiting.

Emiliano smiled.

"My love."

Valeria didn't answer.

He noticed.

"What happened?"

She looked directly at him.

"What are you hiding about Isabella?"

For a fraction of a second...

His face changed.

Only a fraction.

But Valeria saw it.

Then he smiled again.

"What kind of question is that?"

"The kind a mother asks when her husband threatens her."

The smile disappeared.

Slowly.

"You spoke to your mother."

It wasn't a question.

It was an accusation.

Valeria stood.

"Did you plan something during my C-section?"

Emiliano walked closer.

"Careful."

That single word was enough.

The old Valeria would have stepped back.

The old Valeria would have apologized.

But something had changed.

Her mother had reminded her who she was.

"I am the mother of your child."

She said firmly.

"You cannot scare me anymore."

For the first time...

Emiliano looked at her differently.

Not like a wife.

Like an enemy.

"Who told you?"

Valeria's eyes narrowed.

"Told me what?"

He realized his mistake.

Too late.

The next morning, Teresa received a package.

No sender.

No address.

Just her name.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

Three words.

"Watch the truth."

Teresa connected the drive.

A video appeared.

Security footage.

From Santa Regina Clinic.

Date:

Two days before Valeria's final ultrasound.

The camera showed Emiliano entering a restricted medical room.

Then another person entered.

Teresa leaned closer.

Because she recognized the person immediately.

Her heart stopped.

It was someone she trusted.

Someone who had been helping her fight Emiliano.

Someone who knew all their plans.

Someone who had access to everything.

Then the audio started.

Emiliano's voice filled the room.

"You understand what happens if Teresa discovers the truth?"

The other person answered:

"She won't."

"And Valeria?"

A pause.

Then:

"After the baby is born, it won't matter."

Teresa froze.

Her hands tightened around the laptop.

Because she finally understood.

This was never just about controlling Valeria.

It was never just about money.

It was never just about reputation.

Emiliano had been hiding a secret connected to Isabella's birth.

A secret so dangerous...

That someone was willing to destroy an entire family to keep it buried.

Then the video showed one final image.

A document on the table.

A birth certificate draft.

Teresa zoomed in.

And what she saw made her stand up in shock.

Because Isabella's name was written there.

But the father's name...

Was not Emiliano Aranda.

Teresa whispered:

"No..."

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

Because the man who claimed to be the perfect husband...

The man who threatened to control his wife's surgery...

Had been lying about the biggest secret of his life.

And before Teresa could uncover the truth...

Her phone rang.

It was Valeria.

But when she answered, she didn't hear her daughter's voice.

She heard a man's voice.

Cold.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Mrs. Salgado..."

Emiliano.

"I know you saw the video."

Teresa's blood ran cold.

"Where is my daughter?"

A pause.

Then Emiliano whispered:

"That depends."

"On what?"

"On whether you want your daughter to survive the night."

The call ended.

And Teresa finally understood.

The war had begun.

But now...

The battlefield was not the clinic.

May you like

It was her own family.
