CHAPTER 3 — THE SECRET FILE THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYONE

The message disappeared from Valeria’s screen after a few seconds.
But the fear remained.
"Your mother should have stayed quiet."
Six words.
Six words that told her everything she needed to know.
Emiliano knew.
He knew Teresa had moved against him.
He knew someone had opened the door he had spent years locking.
And most terrifying of all…
He was angry.
Valeria sat on the edge of the bed, one hand protecting her belly, the other holding the phone.
Isabella moved inside her.
A small kick.
A reminder.
Her daughter was still there.
Still waiting to be born.
Valeria closed her eyes.
"I'm sorry, baby."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I should have protected you sooner."
But before another tear could fall, Teresa entered the room.
She saw her daughter’s face.
And she immediately understood.
"What happened?"
Valeria handed her the phone.
Teresa read the message.
Her expression did not change.
No panic.
No fear.
Only disappointment.
The kind of disappointment a person feels when someone finally reveals who they truly are.
"He sent this to scare me," Valeria whispered.
"No."
Teresa placed the phone down.
"He sent this because he's scared."
Valeria looked at her.
"Mom, you don't understand. You don't know what he's capable of."
Teresa sat beside her.
"Actually..."
She looked toward the window.
"I know exactly what men like him are capable of."
A pause.
"Because I was married to one."
Valeria froze.
Her mother had never talked about her father.
Not really.
Everyone knew Teresa’s husband had died years ago.
A successful businessman.
A respected man.
A loving father.
At least, that was the story everyone heard.
"Mom..."
Teresa sighed.
"Your father wasn't always kind."
The room became silent.
"He had money. Power. People who protected him."
She looked at her daughter.
"And for years, I believed staying silent would keep our family safe."
Her voice became softer.
"Until I realized silence doesn't protect victims."
"It protects the person hurting them."
Valeria stared at her mother.
For the first time, she understood.
Teresa wasn't fearless.
She had simply already survived a monster once.
Meanwhile, across the city...
Dr. Emiliano Aranda stood inside his private office.
The blinds were closed.
The lights were off.
On his desk were three things:
A legal suspension notice.
A photograph of Valeria.
And a black notebook.
He opened the notebook carefully.
Every page contained information.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Mistakes.
Secrets.
For years, Emiliano had collected information about everyone around him.
Doctors who made errors.
Executives who accepted money.
Officials who owed him favors.
He never trusted anyone.
Because he knew exactly what kind of man he was.
And men like him always assume everyone else is the same.
His phone rang.
"Yes?"
A man's voice answered.
"Doctor, the investigation has started."
Emiliano remained silent.
"How bad?"
"The medical board is looking into several surgical cases."
"Several?"
"Yes."
Emiliano's jaw tightened.
"Who gave them access?"
"We don't know."
A pause.
Then the voice added:
"But there's something else."
"What?"
"The foundation lawyer requested your personal records."
Emiliano stood up.
"My personal records?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
The answer came slowly.
"Because they believe this isn't only about medical negligence."
Silence.
Then Emiliano smiled.
A dangerous smile.
"Domestic violence."
He said the words himself.
The accusation he feared most.
Because mistakes could be explained.
Complications could be hidden.
But abuse?
Abuse destroyed reputations.
It destroyed careers.
It destroyed men like him.
At that same moment, Teresa arrived at the foundation's headquarters.
Unlike the woman Emiliano thought he knew...
This was the real Teresa.
No simple dress.
No quiet smile.
No pretending.
The employees stood when she entered.
"Good morning, Mrs. Salgado."
Valeria followed behind her.
She looked around in disbelief.
All these years...
Her mother had been hiding this world.
The giant glass building.
The executives.
The lawyers.
The hundreds of employees.
"You own all of this?"
Valeria whispered.
Teresa smiled sadly.
"I built it."
"But why didn't you tell me?"
Teresa looked at her daughter.
"Because I wanted you to grow up knowing love, not money."
She paused.
"And because I never wanted power to change who you were."
Valeria looked around.
Then back at her mother.
"But Emiliano knew none of this?"
"No."
"Why?"
Teresa's expression hardened.
"Because arrogant people don't investigate ordinary-looking women."
Inside the conference room, Teresa placed a file on the table.
The foundation lawyer, Rafael, opened it.
"We found something."
Everyone became silent.
"What?"
Rafael looked at Valeria.
Then at Teresa.
"Emiliano wasn't planning only to hurt Valeria."
Valeria's face went pale.
"What do you mean?"
Rafael opened another document.
"Six months ago, he changed the C-section protocol."
Teresa frowned.
"Changed it how?"
"He personally requested to be the only surgeon allowed inside the operating room."
Silence.
"That's impossible," Valeria whispered.
Rafael continued.
"He also removed two nurses who usually assist high-risk procedures."
Teresa felt a chill.
"Why?"
Rafael hesitated.
"Because those nurses had previously reported concerns about his behavior."
Valeria covered her mouth.
"He was preparing."
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
This wasn't an accident waiting to happen.
It was a plan.
Then Rafael placed one final document on the table.
"We found something else."
Teresa opened it.
Her eyes moved across the page.
And for the first time...
Her confidence disappeared.
Because at the bottom of the document was a signature.
Not Emiliano's.
Not a doctor's.
Not a lawyer's.
Someone else's.
Someone Teresa never expected.
Valeria noticed her mother's reaction.
"Mom?"
Teresa slowly looked up.
"Your husband wasn't working alone."
The room became frozen.
"Someone inside the foundation helped him."
Valeria's face changed.
"Who?"
Teresa stared at the signature.
Then whispered:
"The person who has been standing beside me for twelve years."
A terrible silence filled the room.
Because suddenly the enemy wasn't only outside.
The enemy was inside.
And before Valeria could even process the truth...
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A voice whispered:
"Valeria..."
Her blood turned cold.
Because she recognized the voice immediately.
It was someone she trusted.
Someone who knew everything.
Someone who had been pretending to help her.
"I'm sorry," the voice said.
"But your mother doesn't know the whole story."
Valeria looked at Teresa.
"What story?"
A pause.
Then the person on the phone said:
"The baby you're carrying..."
"The baby isn't the only secret Emiliano has been hiding."
The call ended.
And for the first time...
Teresa realized something terrifying.
Maybe Emiliano wasn't trying to destroy their family.
May you like
Maybe he was trying to hide something much bigger.
