Chapter 6 - THE BLOOD LINEThe air inside the private conference room of Michael’s law firm was suffocating.

Karen sat in the corner, discreetly monitoring digital security feeds, while I sat across from Michael. The man I had trusted implicitly for my entire life looked completely broken, sitting with his face buried in his hands.

"Tell me everything," I said, my tone flat, dangerous, and utterly devoid of warmth. "Every single word. If you lie to me once, Michael, I walk out this door and hand every byte of this data to the FBI."

Michael wiped his face and looked up, his eyes bloodshot.

"Mom was working as a senior accountant for a major land-development cartel in East Texas back in the 90s," Michael began, his voice raspy. "She didn't know what they were doing at first. By the time she realized they were laundering money for international trafficking rings through commercial real estate, she was in too deep. If she quit, they would have killed us—you, me, Ethan."

I gripped the edge of the mahogany table, my knuckles turning white.

"So she went to the federal government," Michael continued. "She became a confidential informant. For five years, she quietly diverted cartel funds into a secure, government-sanctioned escrow account—the two million dollars you saw on that statement. It was evidence. Life insurance."

"And the fire?" I asked, my voice barely audible.

"They found out," Michael said bitterly. "September 2008. Someone leaked her identity. They torched her home to destroy the paper records. I was a junior associate at a local firm back then. The federal handling agent called me hours before the attack happened, warning me that Mom’s cover was blown. He helped me create a emergency power-of-attorney to transfer those escrow funds into an offshore holding trust—to keep the money out of the cartel’s hands and protect you."

"And Richard?" I asked. "Where does Richard fit into this?"

"Richard wasn't just your husband, Sarah," Michael looked at me with deep pity. "Richard was the associate legal counsel for the development company Mom was investigating. You met him through Mom’s work, remember? You thought it was romance. It wasn't. Richard was placed in your life to keep eyes on Mom."

A nauseating wave of revulsion crashed over me.

My entire marriage—my son’s father—had been a corporate assignment. A surveillance operation.

"When Mom died and the two million dollars vanished into the Cayman trust," Michael said, "Richard realized the federal government was closing in. He panicked. He couldn't find the money because I had secured the master keys under your legal name—without your knowledge—to ensure you’d be financially protected if anything ever happened to me. So Richard abandoned you and Ethan. He ran, built Apex Capital with stolen cartel seed money, and laid low for years."

"Until Ethan," I said, the horrific realization settling in. "Richard came back for Ethan not because he wanted a son... but because he needed Ethan to get to me."

"Yes," Michael nodded. "Richard knew that under Texas trust law, if you died or were rendered mentally unfit, your sole legal heir—Ethan—would inherit full authority over all trusts linked to your name, including the 2008 Cayman escrow trust. Richard didn't just want your design company, Sarah. He wanted the Cayman account. It now holds over forty million dollars with accumulated interest."

"And Ethan?" I asked, my heart breaking into a thousand pieces. "Did Ethan know about the cartel money? Did he know his grandmother was murdered?"

"No," Michael shook his head vehemently. "Ethan is an idiot, Sarah! He’s a greedy, arrogant kid who got hooked on gambling and let his father manipulate him. Ethan thought he was just helping Richard steal your design company to clear his debts. He has no idea about the forty million dollars. He has no idea he was being used as a disposable key to unlock a dead woman’s cartel fortune."

Suddenly, the glass window of the conference room shattered.

A deafening BANG echoed through the room as a high-powered rifle round punched through the double-paned glass, striking the wall just inches above Michael’s head.

"DOWN!" Michael screamed, throwing himself across the table and tackling me to the floor.

Sparks flew as a second bullet shattered the computer monitors on Karen’s desk. Karen screamed, dropping to the floor and crawling toward the reinforced door.

"THE FIRE ESCAPE! MOVE!" Michael yelled, dragging me by my arm as drywall dust and glass filled the air.

We scrambled out of the conference room into the dimly lit service hallway. The fire alarm began to blare, flashing red lights illuminating the emergency stairwell.

"Who is shooting at us?!" I screamed over the blaring siren as we hurtled down the concrete stairs. "Richard is in police custody!"

"Richard isn't the only one who wanted that money!" Michael yelled back, pulling a concealed 9mm handgun from his shoulder holster. "The cartel company Mom exposed eighteen years ago... they didn't fold, Sarah! They rebranded! They’re the primary financial backing behind Apex Capital!"

We burst through the ground-floor exit door into the alleyway behind the office building.

Standing in the heavy rain at the end of the dark alley was a sleek, black SUV with tinted windows. Its headlights flicked on, blinding us with high beams.

The rear door opened.

A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped out, holding a silenced pistol equipped with a laser sight. The red dot danced across Michael’s chest.

"Drop the weapon, Michael," a smooth, cultured voice called out over the sound of the falling rain.

Michael slowly lowered his gun, keeping himself stepped firmly in front of me. "Who are you?"

The man stepped into the light of a streetlamp.

My jaw dropped.

It wasn't a stranger. It was Marcus Vance—the lead developer of the Riverfront Hotel project. The man who had stood at table one during the gala, pretending to be an innocent investor outraged by Richard’s fraud.

"Marcus..." I gasped.

Marcus smiled, a chilling, polite smile. "Hello, Sarah. I must admit, your mother was a remarkably clever woman. It took us eighteen years, a corrupt son, and a pathetic ex-husband to finally bring the Vance family trust back to the surface."

Marcus pointed the gun directly at my head.

"Now... be a good girl and give me the private decryption keys to the 2008 Cayman account."
