Chapter 7 - THE SACRIFICE OF A BROTHER"She doesn't have the keys, Marcus!" Michael shouted, his body tense, shielding me completely from the barrel of Marcus’s gun. "I hold the master decryption sequence! I’m the one who set up the escrow lock after Eleanor died!"

Marcus shifted his gaze slightly to Michael, his expression unimpressed. "Then you will enter the code into this terminal, Michael. Or I put a bullet through your sister’s knee, followed by her head. You have ten seconds."
One of Marcus’s men stepped out of the SUV, carrying a heavy-duty rugged laptop, and set it on the hood of the vehicle. The screen flickered to life, showing a high-level banking authentication interface requesting a 32-character biometric and alpha-numeric key.
"Michael, don't!" I begged, clutching the back of his wet jacket. "If you give him that money, he’ll kill us both anyway! You know how these people operate!"
"Sarah, quiet," Michael whispered back, his voice surprisingly calm despite the gun pointed at us. "Trust me. One last time."
Michael slowly raised his hands and stepped toward the SUV. "I’ll enter the code. But Sarah walks. Let her get into her car and drive away. Once she’s clear of the downtown area, I’ll hit the final execute key."
Marcus scoffed softly. "You are in no position to negotiate, counselor. But... I am a businessman. I have no personal quarrel with your sister, so long as the money is transferred. Sarah, take three steps back toward the street."
I didn't move. "Michael, no..."
"GO, Sarah!" Michael roared, turning his head back to glare at me with an intensity I had never seen in his eyes. "Get out of here! Take care of Ethan! Fix what’s left of this family!"
Fix what’s left of Ethan? The boy who was sitting in a federal holding cell right now?
I took a slow step back, then another. Marcus’s guard kept his eye on me, but Marcus’s focus was entirely on the laptop screen as Michael approached the vehicle.
Michael reached the hood of the SUV. He laid his hands on the keyboard. His fingers began to fly across the keys, typing in a long, complex sequence of letters and numbers.
"Good," Marcus murmured, leaning over Michael’s shoulder, watching the green progress bar on the screen reach 50%... 75%... 90%. "Eighteen years of waiting. Finally."
"You forgot one thing about my mother, Marcus," Michael said softly, his fingers hovering over the final 'Enter' key.
Marcus paused, his eyes narrowing. "What's that?"
"She wasn't just an accountant," Michael whispered, turning his head to look Marcus dead in the eye. "She was a computer programmer."
Michael slammed his palm down onto the red 'Override' button on the side of the military-grade laptop.
Instantly, the screen turned bright red. Bold, flashing white letters appeared across the display:
SYSTEM PURGE INITIATED. GLOBAL ASSET SEIZURE EXECUTED. ALL FUNDS RE-ROUTED TO FEDERAL ASSET FORFEITURE DATABASE.
Marcus’s face went completely white. "What did you do?!"
"I didn't transfer the forty million dollars to you, Marcus," Michael smiled, a bloody, defiant grin. "I just triggered the federal contingency clause. The entire forty million dollars—along with every single linked Apex Capital asset—has just been permanently surrendered to the United States Department of Justice. And the digital paper trail linking your real estate development firm to international money laundering just got broadcast to every FBI field office in North America."
Marcus went insane with rage. "YOU FOOL!"
BANG!
The gunshot shattered the night air.
"NO!" I shrieked, a sound of unimaginable agony tearing from my throat.
Michael collapsed against the hood of the SUV, clutching his chest, blood pouring between his fingers.
Marcus raised his weapon to finish Michael off, but suddenly, the alleyway erupted into a wall of blaring sirens, flashing red and blue lights, and screeching tires. Three armored FBI SWAT vehicles smashed through the alley barriers, blocking both ends of the lane.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP THEM NOW!" heavily armed tactical officers roared through megaphones, their rifle lasers painting Marcus and his men in dozens of red dots.
Marcus looked around frantically, realizing he had been completely cornered. He dropped his gun, raising his hands in the air as SWAT officers swarmed him, slamming him to the pavement.
I didn't care about Marcus. I didn't care about the FBI.
I sprinted through the rain, dropping to my knees on the cold, wet pavement beside my brother.
"Michael! Michael, stay with me!" I sobbed, ripping off my jacket and pressing it violently against the bleeding wound in his chest. "Look at me! Look at me, Michael! Help is here! The paramedics are right behind them!"
Michael reached up with a blood-stained hand, gasping for air, clutching my wrist.
"Sarah..." he wheezed, blood flecking his lips. "It’s... it’s done. Mom’s memory... it’s clean now. The money... is gone."
"I don't care about the money!" I cried, tears washing away the rain on my face. "I only care about you! You can't leave me, Michael! You're all I have left!"
Michael forced a tiny, faint smile. He reached into his inner jacket pocket with his remaining strength, pulling out a small, bent silver key attached to a blue ribbon.
"Give this... to Ethan," Michael whispered, his breathing growing dangerously shallow.
"Ethan?" I sobbed, confused. "Why? Why Ethan?"
"Because... he’s not... he’s not who you think he is, Sarah..." Michael gasped, his eyes beginning to roll back into his head as the paramedics rushed toward us with a gurney. "Look in... Mom’s old house... under the floorboards... Ethan... he knew..."
Michael’s hand went limp. His eyes closed.
"PULSE IS WEAK! WE NEED AN INTUBATION KIT NOW!" the paramedic screamed, shoving me aside and beginning chest compressions.
I sat on the wet asphalt, staring at the small silver key in my hand, covered in my brother's blood.

Ethan knew.
