CHAPTER 1 — THE WEDDING THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE PERFECT

The church looked like something pulled from a dream.

Morning sunlight streamed through towering stained-glass windows, painting the marble floor with warm shades of gold, crimson, and sapphire. White roses lined every pew. Candles flickered softly despite the still air. A string quartet played a slow melody that echoed beneath the cathedral ceiling.

Every guest smiled.

It was supposed to be the happiest day of Emily Carter's life.

After years of heartbreak, she had finally found someone she believed she could trust completely.

Daniel.

Kind. Successful. Gentle.

Or so everyone believed.

Emily stood near the entrance, wearing an elegant ivory wedding gown that flowed behind her like a cloud. Her hands trembled slightly around her bouquet, but her smile never faded.

Beside her sat the only companion who had never abandoned her.

A seven-year-old German Shepherd named Rex.

Emily had rescued Rex when he was only a starving puppy abandoned beside a highway. Since then, they had survived everything together—her mother's death, losing her job, a painful breakup, years of loneliness.

Rex wasn't just a dog.

He was family.

Many people questioned bringing such a large dog into a formal wedding.

But everyone who knew Rex smiled.

"He would never hurt anyone."

"He protects Emily with his life."

"He's probably the calmest dog I've ever met."

And they were right.

For nearly thirty minutes Rex behaved perfectly.

He walked quietly beside Emily.

He never barked.

Never pulled the leash.

Never looked nervous.

He simply watched.

Always watching.

The ceremony began.

The minister smiled warmly.

"My dear friends..."

Guests wiped tears from their eyes.

Daniel looked lovingly at Emily.

Everything seemed absolutely perfect.

Until the moment they took their first step toward the altar.

Rex suddenly froze.

His ears stood upright.

His body became stiff as stone.

His nose lifted into the air.

He sniffed once.

Then again.

A low growl escaped his throat.

Emily looked down.

"Rex?"

He didn't respond.

His eyes locked onto something ahead.

Something no human noticed.

The growl became louder.

Guests turned around.

The music slowly stopped.

Daniel frowned.

"What's wrong with him?"

Emily gently stroked Rex's head.

"It's okay, boy..."

Instead of calming down...

Rex exploded.

He barked so violently that the sound echoed through the entire church.

People jumped in their seats.

Children began crying.

The minister stepped backward.

Rex lunged forward—not toward anyone...

But toward Emily.

He grabbed the edge of her wedding dress with his teeth and pulled backward with incredible force.

Emily almost fell.

Gasps filled the room.

"What is he doing?"

"Get that dog out!"

"Has he gone crazy?"

Daniel immediately rushed over.

"LET HER GO!"

He grabbed Rex by the collar.

But Rex refused.

His desperate eyes never left Emily.

He kept pulling her away from the altar.

Harder.

Harder.

Almost begging.

Then...

The lights above the altar flickered.

May you like

No one understood why.

Not yet.
