CHAPTER 2 — What Was Hidden Behind the Cliffs Changed Everything

Every instinct told them to leave.

But curiosity—and the sound of that desperate cry—pulled them forward.

The five women exchanged nervous glances before following the dog.

The further they walked, the quieter the beach became.

The laughter of tourists disappeared.

Only crashing waves echoed against the towering cliffs.

The dog ran ahead, stopping every few yards to make sure they were still following.

Then it disappeared around a bend.

Emily rounded the corner first.

She gasped.

Below the cliff was a narrow stretch of rocks hidden from the public beach.

A small sailboat had crashed into the jagged shoreline.

The mast was broken.

Pieces of wood floated in the surf.

Near the wreck lay a man, unconscious, trapped beneath part of the shattered hull.

Beside him...

A little girl no older than seven sat crying.

Her tiny hands were covered in blood as she tried to lift the heavy timber herself.

"Daddy... please wake up..."

The dog rushed to her side.

The girl hugged its neck tightly.

"He went to get help..." she sobbed.

"He kept coming back... but nobody followed him..."

The women instantly understood.

The blood on the dog's fur came from the injured father.

For nearly an hour...

The loyal animal had been desperately searching for someone willing to listen.

Emily grabbed her phone.

"No signal!"

The cliffs blocked reception.

Without hesitation, Sarah climbed back toward the main beach while Rachel ran in the opposite direction searching for lifeguards.

Linda and Monica stayed with the little girl, using towels from their beach bags to slow the bleeding.

Minutes felt like hours.

The injured man grew weaker.

The tide slowly crept closer.

The waves began striking the broken boat harder and harder.

"If help doesn't come soon..."

Emily couldn't finish the sentence.

Then...

The dog suddenly barked again.

This time toward the top of the cliffs.

In the distance...

They heard whistles.

Voices.

Rescue teams.

Sarah had found help.

Within minutes, lifeguards, firefighters, and paramedics carefully freed the trapped father.

The little girl burst into tears as she watched them load him onto a rescue stretcher.

One paramedic quietly looked at the women.

"If that dog hadn't found you..."

He paused.

"...none of them would have survived another twenty minutes."

Every one of the women looked down at the exhausted dog.

For the first time...

It stopped barking.

May you like

It simply lay beside the little girl.

Its job was finally done.
