Chapter 5 - Blood in the Snow“Drop your weapons, Vance, or your next breath will be your last,” a cold, synthesized voice echoed from the hallway.

It was Marcus, Sebastian’s head of security, stepping out of the shadows with a tactical shotgun leveled squarely at the head of the lead federal marshal. Within three seconds, the tables had completely turned. The federal strike team, expecting an easy, glory-filled bust of Boston’s most elusive crime boss, found themselves disarmed, zip-tied, and kneeling on the Persian rug in front of the iron chest.

Agent Vance was shoved roughly onto his knees beside the open chest of diamonds, his tactical vest smelling of sweat and desperation.

Sebastian walked over to him slowly, his polished leather shoes clicking against the hardwood. He looked down at the federal agent with absolute contempt.

“You have a very short memory, Agent Vance,” Sebastian said smoothly, pulling a silk handkerchief from his breast pocket to wipe an imaginary speck of dust from his cuff. “Your brother made the mistake of insulting Ms. Henderson yesterday. You made the far graver mistake of pointing a loaded weapon at her tonight.”

“You can’t do this, Rourke!” Vance spat, blood trickling from a split lip where Marcus had subdued him. “We have a federal warrant!”

“You have a forged warrant signed by a corrupt municipal judge in Worcester whom my legal team bought off three years ago,” Sebastian replied coolly. He crouched down until he was eye-level with the trembling agent. “Did you really think I wouldn't check the credentials of the men tracking my family history?”

Vance stared at him in horror. “Family... history?”

“The diamonds belong to the Rourke estate. They were recovered legally through Swiss restitution courts in 1968,” Sebastian said, standing back up. “Marcus, escort our federal guests out through the servants' snow-tunnel. Dump their comms in the icy creek on the north ridge. Let them walk back to Boston in the freezing rain to think about their career choices.”

As the federal agents were dragged away, cursing and shivering, the heavy oak doors were pulled shut once more.

The silence that settled over the study was heavy, thick with the scent of ozone, fear, and lingering adrenaline.

Chloe stood frozen near the marble statue, her hands shaking slightly as she clutched her leather portfolio to her chest. The obsidian dress clung to her curves, her breath coming in short, uneven gasps.

Sebastian turned around. The harsh red backup lights caught the silver at his temples and the faint scar on his cheek, making him look like an ancient warlord standing amidst the ruins of his enemies.

He walked toward her. Slowly. Deliberately.

Chloe’s back pressed gently against the cool stone of the fifteenth-century marble statue. She could run—the door was wide open, the hallway was clear, and she could be in her car and halfway to Cambridge before dawn.

She didn't move an inch.

Sebastian stopped just a breath away. His large, scarred hands came up, resting flat against the marble wall on either side of her head, trapping her completely within his orbit.

“You’re shaking,” he murmured, his voice losing its dangerous edge and softening into something rich and dark.

“You threatened to destroy federal agents in your own living room,” Chloe whispered back, her chest rising and falling against his arm. “I have every right to shake.”

“And yet, you didn't run,” Sebastian noted, his gaze dropping slowly to her lips before rising back to meet her eyes. “Even when you had the chance. Even when you saw what kind of monster I really am.”

“You protected me,” she whispered, the words slipping out before she could stop them.

May you like

Sebastian’s eyes flared with a dark, intense heat. He leaned in closer, his breath warm against her lips.

“I told you when you first walked into this house, Chloe... one day, you would crave only me.” He reached out, his rough thumb gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “Are you ready to admit that the day has finally come?”
