Chapter 9 - The Boardroom ConfrontationThe executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Rourke Maritime Tower in downtown Boston looked out over a gray, churning Atlantic Ocean.

The mahogany conference table was surrounded by twelve men and women—the senior elders of the East Coast syndicate. They were old money, old blood, and old cruelty.
At the head of the table sat Elena Vance, flanked by two armed security guards, a smug smile plastered across her face.
The heavy double doors swung open.
Sebastian Rourke walked in.
He didn't wear a heavy overcoat. He wore a crisp, tailored charcoal suit, his silver-streaked hair immaculate, his stride completely unhurried.
And walking right beside him, holding a leather briefcase like a general entering a conquered territory, was Chloe Henderson.
She wore a structured midnight-blue pantsuit that commanded the room, her shoulders back, her chin held high. The murmurs around the table started instantly—whispers about her size, her presence, her audacity at stepping into the inner sanctum of the syndicate.
“Sebastian,” an elderly board member named Sterling rasped, coughing into his fist. “What is the meaning of this? This is a closed syndicate meeting. Civilians are not permitted.”
“She is not a civilian, Sterling,” Sebastian said smoothly, pulling out the chair at the far end of the table and seating Chloe before taking his own place beside her. “She is the chief acquisitions and provenance officer of the Rourke estate.”
Elena laughed, leaning forward across the table. “Provenance? Sebastian, have you lost your mind? She’s an appraiser from a failing firm in Cambridge who couldn't even survive a standard corporate audit!”
“Is that so, Elena?” Chloe asked. Her voice was calm, crystal clear, and cut through the murmurs like a scalpel.
She opened her leather briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of financial audits, and tossed them across the polished mahogany table directly toward Elena.
Papers slid across the wood and stopped in front of Sterling.
“What is this?” Sterling muttered, putting on his reading glasses.
“Those are the forensic accounting records of the New York syndicate over the past four years,” Chloe said steadily, standing up so she towered over the table. “Compiled using public tax registries, encrypted offshore shell companies, and documentation recovered from the Florentine chest at Westbridge Manor. Specifically, they detail how Elena Vance has been systematically embezzling syndicate funds to finance her personal real estate empire in Manhattan.”
The boardroom erupted into chaos.
Shouts echoed off the glass walls. Several elders snatched up the papers, their faces turning pale as they scanned the undeniable proof of embezzlement.
Elena’s face drained of all color, her smug smile shattering into absolute panic. “It’s lies! She’s fabricating documents! Security, throw this cow out of the building!”
The two armed guards stepped forward, reaching for their holsters.
Before their fingers even grazed leather, the boardroom doors flew open again.
Marcus and four of Sebastian’s top tactical officers stepped inside, their sidearms drawn and leveled directly at the syndicate guards.
“Try it,” Marcus said coldly.
The guards froze, slowly lifting their hands into the air.
Sebastian remained seated, watching Elena with the detached coldness of an executioner. He slowly turned his head to look at Chloe, a look of profound, burning pride in his dark eyes.

“The vote to strip me of my title, Elena?” Sebastian asked quietly, his voice carrying over the silenced room. “Care to call for it now?”
Elena glared across the table, shaking with impotent rage, knowing her empire had just crumbled into dust.
