Chapter 4 - THE WEB OF DECEIT

"Embezzlement?" Jake scrambled back to his feet, his voice pitching into a hysterical shriek. "Are you out of your mind?! I have never stolen a cent from Vanguard! Every transaction was audited!"

"Was it, Jake?" I walked over to the wet bar, poured myself another sip of water, and turned back to face them, my expression completely serene. "Let’s talk about the offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands last October under the name Apex Media Holdings. Shall we?"

Jake’s jaw dropped open. The air seemed to leave his lungs all at once.

Amanda pushed herself off the wall, staring at Jake with sudden, razor-sharp betrayal in her eyes. "Apex Media? Jake... what is she talking about?"

"Nothing! She’s bluffing!" Jake stammered, sweating profusely now, his eyes darting frantically between Amanda and me. "Em, you’re making things up—"

"I never bluff, darling," I interrupted, tapping my tablet. "Martin’s forensic accountants spent the last three weeks auditing your private expenditures. They tracked twelve million dollars in company funds funneled through three shell companies directly into a private Swiss bank account—an account registered under your personal social security number, Jake, with power of attorney granted to... oh, look at that. To Amanda’s personal assistant."

Amanda slowly turned her head to look at Jake, her voice dropping into a deadly, freezing whisper. "Jake. Tell me that’s a lie."

"Amanda, listen to me, she’s trying to tear us apart—"

"Don't you dare lie to me!" Amanda screamed, her professional composure finally shattering into jagged pieces. She lunged forward, shoving Jake hard against the wall. "You used my assistant to stash embezzled funds?! If federal investigators trace corporate fraud back to my family’s trust, my father will disown me before the sun comes up!"

"Oh, they won't just trace it, Amanda," I said, my voice cutting through their frantic shouting like glass. "The FBI’s white-collar crime division received the complete audit file via secure electronic transfer at exactly 11:15 PM."

Jake went completely rigid. His eyes widened in absolute horror. "You... you called the FBI?"

"Of course I did," I replied, tilting my head with polite curiosity. "What kind of scorned wife would I be if I didn't hand my cheating husband and his little corporate mistress over to federal prosecutors on a silver platter?"

Amanda stared at me, her chest heaving, the realization of total, unmitigated destruction crashing down upon her. All her wealth, all her family’s social standing, all her CEO ambition—evaporated in a single night because she had chosen to sleep with a married man who thought he could outsmart his wife.

"You’re a monster," Amanda whispered, her voice trembling with impotent rage.

"No, Amanda," I replied, stepping forward until I was standing mere inches away from her, my gaze as cold and sharp as winter steel. "I am a businesswoman. You stepped onto my chessboard, stole my piece, and tried to checkmate me in public. You just didn't realize that I owned the board, the pieces, and the table it was sitting on."

Jake dropped his head into his hands, sliding down the elevator wall until he was sitting in a crumpled heap on the floor, weeping openly.

"Please, Emma..." he sobbed. "Please... drop the charges. We can settle this privately. I'll give you everything. I'll sign over my entire share. I'll walk away with nothing!"

"You already are walking away with nothing, Jake," I said quietly.

I turned my back on them, walking slowly toward the grand double doors of my living room.

"Security will escort you out now," I called over my shoulder without looking back. "And if either of you ever steps foot on my property again, federal marshals won't be the only ones waiting for you."

The heavy oak doors swung shut behind me with a solid, echoing thud, sealing away the wreckage of my past life forever.
