Chapter 6 - THE SHADOWS CLOSING IN

The federal holding facility was cold, smelling of industrial bleach, damp concrete, and unmitigated despair.

Jake Sterling sat on the edge of a bolted-down metal bunk, staring blankly at the chipped green paint of the cell wall. His designer suit was long gone, replaced by an unflattering, coarse orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his rapidly shrinking frame.

The door clanked open, and a guard’s voice echoed harshly down the concrete corridor.

"Sterling! Legal visit. Room three."

Jake didn't move for a long moment. His mind felt like static. Ever since the FBI had executed the dawn raid on his penthouse three weeks ago, his entire reality had dissolved into a nightmare. Amanda’s father had immediately severed all ties, hiring a high-powered legal team whose sole objective was pinning 100% of the embezzlement charges directly on Jake to protect the Vance family name.

Amanda herself hadn't spoken to him since their arrest. In the courtroom, she had looked right through him as if he were a ghost—a stranger she had never met.

Dragged into small visiting room three, Jake slumped into the bolted metal chair opposite his court-appointed public defender—a tired-looking man named Henderson who smelled faintly of stale coffee and cheap tobacco.

"Mr. Sterling," Henderson said without looking up from his worn manila folder. "We received the updated plea proposal from the U.S. Attorney’s office this morning."

Jake swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. "What... what are the terms?"

Henderson finally looked up, his eyes heavy with pity. "If you plead guilty to wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and securities tampering, the prosecution will recommend a baseline sentence of seven years in federal prison."

Seven years.

The number echoed in Jake’s skull like a gunshot. Seven years behind bars. By the time he got out, he would be in his late forties, penniless, branded a felon, and completely forgotten by the world he had tried so desperately to conquer.

"Seven years?" Jake choked out, grabbing his hair in his trembling hands. "That’s... that’s a life sentence! What about Amanda? What about the twelve million she helped transfer?"

Henderson closed the folder with a soft snap. "Amanda Vance’s legal team presented a completely documented paper trail proving that you coerced her assistant under false pretenses and forged her digital signature on the offshore wire transfers. The prosecutors accepted her plea for immunity in exchange for full cooperation against you."

Jake’s heart stopped.

Immunity.

While he was facing a decade behind bars, Amanda—the woman he had betrayed his wife for, the woman he had pledged his future to on stage—was walking free, protected by her family’s infinite wealth and political influence.

"She set me up," Jake whispered, tears finally spilling over his eyelids, tracking hot paths down his hollow cheeks. "She used me... and then she threw me to the wolves."

"Welcome to the real world, Mr. Sterling," Henderson said quietly, sliding a pen across the table. "Sign page four, or take your chances at trial where the federal conviction rate is ninety-nine percent. The choice is yours."

Jake stared at the black ink pen, his hands shaking so violently he could barely grip it. He thought back fourteen years to a cramped basement apartment, where a woman named Emma had handed him a hot cup of coffee, kissed his forehead, and told him she believed in his dreams.

He had traded a queen for a shadow, and now, he was paying the ultimate price in the dark.
