Chapter 8 - Empire Reborn

The storm outside finally began to break, leaving the Catskill mountains wrapped in a cool, misty silence.
Marcus Vance was locked securely in the mansion’s walk-in wine cellar, waiting for the federal marshals Evander had quietly summoned using an encrypted satellite phone. The shadow ledger was back in Evander’s possession, its encrypted files permanently wiped clean of any false trails pointing toward my name.
I sat on the edge of the large stone hearth, staring into the flickering embers of the fire. Evander’s jacket still draped over my shoulders, keeping me warm.
Footsteps approached softly across the room.
Evander stopped in front of me. He knelt down on one knee, ignoring the soot on the floor, and gently took my hands in his. His knuckles were bruised from the punch, but his touch was remarkably tender.
"Are you alright?" he asked, his voice low and rich with an emotion he no longer tried to hide.
"I survived a billionaire mafia boss showing up at my door at two in the morning, a high-speed mountain chase, and a corporate coup by my own boss," I said, a faint, exhausted smile touching my lips. "I think I’ll manage."
Evander let out a soft, low chuckle—a sound so rare and genuine that it made my heart skip a beat.
"I'm sorry," he murmured, his thumb stroking the back of my hand. "I swore I would never let my world touch yours. I tried to keep you safe by keeping my distance."
"And look how well that worked," I teased gently. "Turns out, I’m the vault."
Evander’s expression softened, the hard edges of the ruthless mafia boss melting away entirely.
"You were never just a vault, Quinn," he said, looking up at me with an intensity that took my breath away. "You were the only real thing in a life built on lies and leverage. When I thought they had used your name to destroy us... I realized something terrifying."
"What?"
"My empire, Zarelli Capital, all the money, all the power—none of it matters if I don't have you to share it with." He reached up, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear. "I’m stepping down as CEO on Monday. I’m handing the corporate side to the board, and I’m walking away from the shadows."
I stared at him, wide-eyed. "Walk away? Evander, you are the empire."
May you like
"No," he corrected softly, leaning forward until his forehead rested gently against mine. "The empire was a prison. You are my home."
His lips found mine then—not with the desperate panic of the night before, but with a deep, certain, irreversible promise. The rain stopped entirely outside, and as his arms wrapped around me, pulling me down onto the warm hearth rug, I knew my ordinary life was gone forever—and I had never been happier.
