Chapter 3 - Shadows and Subterfuge

The holding cells at the Manhattan federal detention facility smelled of industrial bleach and unyielding despair. Outside, the rain beat a relentless, rhythmic tattoo against the reinforced glass, matching the heavy atmosphere inside.

I sat across the steel interrogation table from Chloe Bennett, a steaming cup of black coffee between us. The federal prosecutor’s office was already buzzing with activity; the arrest of Adrian Cole had triggered immediate shockwaves through Wall Street. Within hours of the raid on the penthouse, Cole Industries stock had plummeted by forty-two percent, and emergency board meetings were being convened across the globe to distance the corporation from the collapsing empire.

"You realize," Chloe said, taking a slow sip of her coffee and looking at me over the rim of the paper cup, "that you just blew the lid off a ten-year financial corruption ring that even the SEC couldn't crack."

"I didn't blow the lid off anything, Chloe," I replied calmly, tracing the edge of my cup with my thumb. "I just handed you the crowbar. Adrian and his mother built their entire kingdom on intimidation, silence, and the assumption that anyone from a working-class background could be easily crushed or bought off."

"And the wedding night ambush?" Chloe raised an eyebrow, a slight smirk playing on her lips. "Handwritten rules, a leather whip, and a secret recording? Were you expecting that, or was that pure, unadulterated improvised justice?"

"I knew Adrian had a dark side," I admitted, my gaze drifting toward the one-way mirror where Adrian could be seen pacing his cell like a caged wolf. "For two years, he was charming, attentive, and generous—almost too generous. But there were slips. Little moments of arrogance where he talked about people as if they were disposable objects. When his mother started her subtle psychological warfare, trying to isolate me, I knew something was deeply wrong. So, I dug."

"And what you found led you straight to Victoria Vance," Chloe said, her tone turning serious. "The coroner’s report from three years ago listed her death as an accidental overdose in a private Swiss chalet. But the files you recovered from Adrian's hidden cloud server tell a completely different story."

"Victoria didn't overdose," I said quietly, the memory of reading those encrypted digital journals flashing through my mind. "She tried to expose Adrian's insider trading scheme. When she threatened to go to the authorities, Adrian and Charlotte staged her disappearance, using their wealth and influence to bury the investigation before it even began. They thought they were untouchable."

"Well, they aren't untouchable anymore," Chloe said, sliding a thick file across the table. "With the live-stream footage from your pendant capturing Adrian’s threats, combined with the financial ledgers you pulled from his private drive, we have enough to lock him away for the next twenty years. And Charlotte? Her corporate conspiracy charges will strip her of every last penny and asset she owns."

Just then, the heavy steel door of the interrogation room swung open.

Attorney Holloway stood in the doorway, looking exhausted and defeated. He wasn't wearing his usual arrogant smirk; his tie was loosened, and his briefcase hung limply at his side. He looked at me with a mixture of professional awe and deep-seated dread.

"Mrs. Cole—or, I suppose, Miss Vance, legally speaking, given the annulment papers you filed this morning," Holloway began cautiously. "Mr. Adrian Cole wishes to speak with you."

I looked up, my expression completely unreadable.

"Tell Adrian," I said, standing up and smoothing my jacket, "that I'm done talking to men who need rules to feel powerful. If he has anything to say, he can say it to a federal judge."
