Chapter 7 - THE FINAL STANDWe both turned our heads toward the stairs.

Standing at the threshold, leaning heavily on a carved wooden cane, was Grandma Evelyn. Behind her stood Luis Ramirez and three heavily armed federal tactical officers, their laser sights painting red dots across Chloe’s chest.
Grandma walked down the concrete steps, her posture rigid, her eyes burning with an authority that commanded the entire room.
"Grandma, what are you doing out of the safe house?" I asked, lowering my weapon just an inch out of sheer astonishment. "It’s not safe here!"
"Safe?" Grandma let out a short, dry laugh, stopping ten feet away from Chloe. "I spent thirty-five years hiding in the shadows of this family, watching my son and his wife destroy everything I built, and watching my granddaughters tear each other apart over their approval. I'm done hiding, Maya."
Chloe’s hand trembled slightly as she held the propane torch, her eyes darting between the tactical officers and Grandma. "Get out of here, old woman. I swear to God, I'll burn the whole thing down."
"Go ahead, Chloe," Grandma said calmly, taking another step forward. "Burn the ledgers. Burn the house. But you should know something before you strike that match."
Chloe hesitated, her jaw tightening. "What are you talking about?"
"Those aren't the original ledgers in that safe," Grandma said with a chilling smile. "I cleared out that wall alcove three days ago, right before I sent Maya the blue bird message. The real files—including the wire transfers linking your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands to international arms dealers—are currently sitting on Director Vance’s desk at federal headquarters."
Chloe’s face turned completely white. The tablet slipped from her hand, shattering against the concrete floor.
"You... you lied," Chloe whispered, her voice cracking.
"I learned from the best," Grandma replied smoothly. "I raised your mother, and I taught your sister how to survive in a world of liars."
With a sudden burst of desperation, Chloe flicked the torch, trying to ignite the remaining papers on the wooden crate.
I didn't hesitate. I lunged forward across the concrete, tackling Chloe hard to the ground just as the spark caught. Luis and the tactical officers swarmed in a second later, kicking the torch away, smothering the stray flame with a heavy canvas tarp, and slapping steel handcuffs onto Chloe’s wrists.
As they hauled her to her feet, Chloe stared down at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You think you won, Maya?" she screamed as they dragged her toward the stairs. "You think the Bureau is clean? Look at who signed your final task force authorization!"
Then, she laughed—a manic, piercing sound that faded into the rainy night as they led her out of the basement.
