Chapter 9 - THE NEW HORIZONThree weeks later, the headlines dominated every major news network across the country:

FEDERAL TASK FORCE CORRUPTION SCANDAL: DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL RESIGNS AMID MULTI-STATE ELDER-FRAUD PROBE.
PORTLAND FAMILY SYNDICATE DISMANTLED BY FEDERAL INVESTIGATOR.
In the cozy living room of a quiet cottage overlooking the rugged Oregon coastline, the sound of rain tapping against the window was peaceful and steady.
There were no sarcastic Thanksgiving toasts. There were no cutting comparisons about house ownership or corporate careers.
Just the quiet click of a wooden chess piece hitting the board.
Grandma Evelyn sat across from me, moving her rook with deliberate precision. "Your defense is sloppy on the left flank, Maya. You're leaving yourself open to a counter-attack."
"Not anymore, Grandma," I said, moving my knight to block her path, trapping her king in a definitive checkmate. "I’ve learned to watch all the angles."
Grandma chuckled, leaning back in her floral armchair and sipping her chamomile tea. "Checkmate. You finally beat me fair and square."
"It only took fifteen years," I smiled, looking out at the vast, grey expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
My parents were currently awaiting trial in a federal detention facility in upstate New York. Chloe and Marcus were facing multiple counts of racketeering, financial conspiracy, and treason, with plea negotiations going nowhere fast. The Aethelgard network was completely dismantled, its assets seized by the Treasury to be returned dollar-for-dollar to the elderly victims who had lost everything.
As for me, the Bureau had quietly offered me a promotion to head up the newly restructured federal anti-corruption division—with full operational autonomy and zero bureaucratic oversight.
I turned down the office in Washington, D.C. instead, I chose to stay right here in the Pacific Northwest, operating out of a quiet, unassuming office with a hand-painted sign on the door that read simply: Cole Investigations.
My phone buzzed on the coffee table.
I picked it up. A new text message from an unknown, encrypted number flashed on the screen.
The blue bird has a new nest. Are you ready for the next game, Agent Cole?
I looked across the table at Grandma Evelyn. She didn't look worried. She just raised her teacup in a silent, knowing toast, her eyes sparkling with the same fierce, unyielding wisdom that had saved my life.
May you like
I smiled, typed a single word back into the encrypted terminal, and hit send.
Always.
