Three months later, the headlines in the financial sections of Mexico’s major newspapers were dominated by a single name: Lucía Elena Montero.

The fall of the Villaseñor textile empire had been swift and absolute. Uncle Roberto had ousted Andrés from the board, Doña Patricia had retreated to a modest apartment on the outskirts of the city where no one knew her name, and Andrés was facing federal audits for corporate fraud and falsification of financial collateral.
