Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Confrontation

The social worker looked back and forth between Julian and Doña Carmen, holding up a hand to calm the situation. "Sir, please lower your voice. We are in a medical facility. Your mother has filed a formal report regarding—"

"My mother is a compulsive liar and a criminal!" Julian interrupted, his chest heaving as he stood face-to-face with Doña Carmen. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, his thumb swiping furiously through his photo gallery. "She didn't come here to save anyone. She came here to finish destroying my family because she couldn't control us!"

Doña Carmen sneered, crossing her arms. "Show them whatever you want, Julian. No one is going to believe a hysterical man over a mother who only wanted to protect her bloodline."

"Really?" Julian’s eyes flashed with a dangerous light. He tapped the screen of his phone and turned it toward the social worker. "Take a look at this."

On the screen was a video Julian had taken just before leaving the apartment—a clear, high-definition recording of the heavy metal brackets screwed into the outside of the bedroom door, followed by a shot of the half-empty bottle of bitter, unlabelled herbal liquid Doña Carmen had forced Mariana to drink every morning, which Julian had carefully poured into a clean water bottle and brought with him as evidence.

"That... that proves nothing!" Doña Carmen stammered, her voice losing its absolute composure as she caught sight of the video. "I installed those brackets because the door didn't close properly! And that liquid is just herbal tea!"

"Is that why the neighbor across the hall, Doña Lupita, heard you screaming threats through the door three days ago while Mariana was crying for help?" Julian asked, his voice deathly quiet as he pulled up an audio recording on his phone. He pressed play.

The tinny, unmistakable sound of Doña Carmen’s voice echoed loudly in the hospital hallway: “If you tell Julian a single word about what I give you, I’ll make sure he throws you out on the street with the clothes on your back! You hear me? You’re nothing!”

The social worker’s expression hardened immediately. She closed her clipboard and turned her stern gaze from Julian directly to Doña Carmen.

"Señora," the social worker said crisply, "tampering with a pregnant woman's medication, unlawful confinement, and verbal intimidation constitute severe criminal offenses and grounds for immediate legal restriction. Furthermore, based on this evidence, your report of maternal neglect is formally dismissed."

Doña Carmen stepped back, her face draining of all color. She pointed a trembling finger at Julian. "You... you recording me? I gave you life! I raised you alone after your father died! And you’re turning against me for a foreign girl?"

"You didn't raise me out of love, Mom. You raised me to be your prisoner, just like you tried to make Mariana your prisoner," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. He looked at his mother not with anger, but with absolute finality. "Listen to me very carefully. If you ever come within five hundred meters of my wife, my home, or my child again, I will personally hand this phone and these audio files to the district attorney. Your key to our lives is broken forever."

Doña Carmen opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Surrounded by the disapproving stares of the hospital staff and security guards who had begun to gather, she turned on her heel and fled down the hallway, her high heels clicking frantically against the floor until she vanished into the elevator.

Julian stood still for a long moment, letting out a breath he felt he had been holding for months.
