Chapter 6 - A New Dawn in Portales

Two months later, the morning sun poured warmly through the cracked window of the small apartment in the Portales neighborhood of Mexico City.
The familiar scent of fresh sweet bread drifted up from the bakery down the block, mingling with the rich, comforting aroma of brewing coffee. Outside, the early morning buses rumbled past, but inside, the apartment felt different—lighter, warmer, and truly safe for the first time.
In the small living room, Julian stood beside a brand-new wooden crib, carefully adjusting a soft blue blanket. His hands were steady, and his heart was at peace.
From the bedroom doorway came the sound he had prayed for weeks to hear again: the soft, rhythmic tapping of footsteps, followed by the sound of genuine, unburdened laughter.
Mariana walked into the living room, leaning slightly on a wooden cane, her legs wrapped in supportive compression stockings. Though she still moved slowly, her steps were firm and determined. Her skin glowed with health, and cradled safely in her arms was a healthy, sleeping newborn baby boy with a head of thick, dark hair—little Mateo.
Julian turned around, his eyes shining with unshed tears of gratitude. He walked over to them, gently wrapping his arms around Mariana’s waist and pressing a tender kiss to the top of the baby’s head.
"How are your legs today, my love?" Julian whispered, smiling down at her.

Mariana looked up at him, her eyes bright and filled with a deep, unbreakable love. She leaned her head against his shoulder. "They hurt a little bit when I walk too fast... but with you and our son here, I feel like I can walk through fire."
Julian smiled, tightening his embrace around his small family. The shadows left behind by Doña Carmen’s cruelty had finally been swept away by truth, resilience, and unconditional love. The door to their home was unlocked, wide open to a future that belonged entirely to them.
