CHAPTER 1 — THE PERFECT FAMILY WAS A LIE

The Garza mansion stood like a palace above the hills of Las Lomas de Chapultepec, where Mexico City's wealthiest families competed to display success more than happiness. Imported Italian marble reflected the afternoon sun. Crystal fountains shimmered beneath centuries-old olive trees flown in from Spain. Every flower bed was maintained with military precision.
From the outside, the estate looked like paradise.
Inside...
It had become a prison.
Every magazine in the country praised Alejandro Garza as the ideal father. At only forty-three years old, he had transformed a small architecture studio into one of Mexico's largest luxury development companies. Newspapers called him "The Man Who Built the Skyline."
Yet every interview ended the same way.
"My greatest achievement isn't my business," Alejandro would always say while smiling proudly.
"It's my daughter."
Seven-year-old Sofía had once been the happiest child anyone had ever met.
Before tragedy entered their lives.
Her mother, Elena, had died unexpectedly after an aggressive autoimmune illness that progressed so quickly doctors barely had time to understand it. In less than six weeks, Alejandro went from planning family vacations to standing beside a white coffin, holding his little girl's tiny trembling hand while promising...
"I'll never let anything bad happen to you again."
He truly meant it.
For nearly three years he devoted himself entirely to Sofía.
He learned how to braid her hair despite making terrible mistakes.
He attended every school recital.
He canceled multimillion-dollar meetings just to watch her ballet rehearsals.
Employees often joked that the billionaire architect became completely powerless whenever his daughter wrapped her arms around his neck.
Then...
Everything changed.
One charity gala introduced him to Valeria Montenegro.
She seemed like everything heaven had sent to heal a broken family.
Elegant.
Educated.
Compassionate.
She volunteered at children's hospitals.
She donated to orphanages.
She constantly posted inspirational messages about kindness, motherhood, and unconditional love to her millions of followers.
Even Sofía smiled politely whenever Valeria visited.
Or so Alejandro believed.
Six months later...
They were married.
Friends congratulated him.
Business partners admired him.
The tabloids called them "Mexico City's New Royal Couple."
No one noticed one important detail.
Sofía stopped smiling in every family photograph.
At first...
Alejandro blamed grief.
Then school stress.
Then childhood anxiety.
Every explanation sounded reasonable.
Valeria always had the perfect answer.
"She's still adjusting."
"She misses her mother."
"Children process emotions differently."
"Don't worry, darling. I'll take care of everything."
Alejandro wanted to believe her.
Because believing her was easier than imagining evil could exist inside his own home.
Unfortunately...
Evil had already unpacked its suitcases.
Every weekday followed exactly the same routine.
At 7:30 every morning Alejandro kissed Sofía goodbye before leaving for his corporate headquarters in Santa Fe.
Valeria would wave lovingly from the front entrance.
The security guards smiled.
The gardeners greeted everyone.
The house looked peaceful.
Exactly five minutes after Alejandro's armored SUV disappeared around the corner...
Valeria transformed.
The warm smile vanished.
The affectionate voice disappeared.
Her eyes became cold.
Expressionless.
Calculating.
"Sofía."
No answer.
"Louder."
"Yes... Valeria."
"I told you not to call me that."
The little girl immediately corrected herself.
"Yes... ma'am."
"Better."
She wasn't allowed to say "Mom."
She wasn't allowed to hug Valeria.
She wasn't allowed to eat unless given permission.
She wasn't even allowed to play with most of the expensive toys displayed around the mansion.
Those toys weren't for Sofía.
They existed only for social media photographs.
Whenever Valeria recorded videos for her followers, Sofía became the perfect little princess.
The moment recording stopped...
The performance ended.
One afternoon Valeria had calmly taken away every stuffed animal Elena had once bought for her daughter.
"They make the house look cheap."
Another day she threw away Elena's framed family photographs.
"The past is ugly."
Little by little...
Every trace of Sofía's real mother disappeared from the mansion.
Only Sofía remembered.
And remembering became dangerous.
That Tuesday morning the weather forecast warned residents to remain indoors because of extreme heat.
Valeria laughed after hearing the report.
"Perfect."
She grabbed Sofía's wrist so tightly that tiny red marks immediately appeared.
"You'll stay outside today."
"But... it's really hot..."
"I wasn't asking."
She pushed the little girl into the enormous backyard before locking the glass doors from inside.
Click.
The sound echoed like a prison cell closing.
Sofía gently knocked once.
No answer.
Twice.
Still nothing.
Finally...
She simply sat beneath the only small patch of shade she could find beside an old jacaranda tree.
Hours passed.
The temperature continued rising.
Birds hid beneath rooftops.
Even the family dogs had been brought indoors.
Only Sofía remained outside.
Alone.
Hungry.
Forgotten.
Inside the mansion...
Valeria slowly walked upstairs.
She changed into an expensive white designer outfit.
Applied fresh makeup.
Sprayed imported perfume.
Then smiled at herself in the mirror.
"Much better."
Her phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Lucas: I'm outside.
Her smile became genuine for the first time all day.
She picked up her luxury handbag.
Ignored the backyard completely.
And walked toward the front entrance.
What neither Valeria...
Nor Lucas...
Nor anyone else realized...
Was that someone had quietly canceled Alejandro's meeting only twenty minutes earlier.
Across the city, inside a conference room filled with frustrated executives, Alejandro checked his watch.
"Looks like we'll reschedule."
He decided to surprise Sofía with lunch.
Maybe ice cream afterward.
Perhaps even leave work early.
He smiled while driving home.
He had absolutely no idea...
That within the next hour...
Everything he believed about his marriage...
His family...
And the woman sleeping beside him every night...
Would collapse forever.
Because hidden inside the walls of the Garza mansion...
Silent cameras had been recording every second.
And one forgotten memory card contained evidence so monstrous...
That it would soon shock the entire country.
