CHAPTER 3 — THE CONSPIRACY WAS FAR MORE EVIL THAN ANYONE IMAGINED

Alejandro sat frozen in the security room.
His fingers refused to move.
His mind refused to accept what his eyes had just witnessed.
The woman he had trusted with his daughter's life...
Had been living as a complete stranger beneath his own roof.
For nearly ten minutes, the room remained silent except for the humming of the surveillance monitors.
Then something caught his attention.
The video timeline still had hours left.
His instincts told him not to stop watching.
So he pressed play.
The hidden camera inside the main living room showed Valeria leading the younger man toward her private sitting area, a room she always claimed was reserved for meditation and online charity meetings.
No servants were allowed inside.
Not even the housekeeper.
Valeria carefully locked the door behind them.
She checked every window before pulling a small black device from her handbag.
The young man frowned.
"Do you really think that's necessary?"
"It blocks signals," Valeria replied calmly.
"No phones. No microphones."
"We can't make mistakes anymore."
Alejandro leaned closer to the screen.
He recognized the device.
Years earlier, one of his corporate security consultants had shown him similar equipment used during industrial espionage.
Valeria had planned this meeting carefully.
The camera inside the room had no audio because of the signal interference.
But another hidden camera placed in the hallway still recorded everything that happened when the door opened.
For nearly forty minutes, nobody came out.
Alejandro skipped ahead.
At 10:03 a.m., the door finally opened.
Valeria walked into the hallway carrying a thick blue folder.
The younger man followed behind her.
As she adjusted the papers, one page slipped onto the marble floor.
Neither of them noticed.
After they disappeared upstairs, one of the housekeepers entered the hallway to begin cleaning.
She picked up the document.
The camera zoomed automatically as she held it.
Alejandro's pulse exploded.
Across the top of the page were the words:
TRANSFER OF MAJORITY SHAREHOLDER AUTHORITY
Below...
His own name.
The document appeared to authorize the transfer of control over Garza Developments.
His signature was already there.
Or at least...
A perfect imitation of it.
Alejandro felt sick.
"They forged my signature..."
His company was worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Someone wasn't planning to steal money.
They were planning to steal his entire empire.
But the greatest shock arrived seconds later.
The housekeeper frowned at the document.
She seemed confused.
Before she could read further...
Valeria suddenly rushed back into the hallway.
She snatched the papers from the woman's hands with frightening aggression.
"What are you doing?"
"I... I only found this on the floor, ma'am."
Valeria forced a smile.
"You saw nothing."
The housekeeper nodded nervously.
"I'm sorry."
After the frightened employee walked away, Valeria turned toward the younger man.
Her pleasant expression disappeared instantly.
She slapped him across the face.
Hard.
"You idiot!"
"You almost ruined everything!"
The man lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
"Sorry doesn't fix mistakes."
"If Alejandro discovers those papers before the board meeting..."
"We lose everything."
Board meeting?
Alejandro quickly opened his calendar.
His eyes widened.
The annual shareholders' meeting...
Was only five days away.
If those forged documents were accepted...
He could legally lose control of the company he had spent twenty years building.
His own wife...
Was preparing to erase him.
But why?
She already enjoyed unlimited luxury.
Private jets.
Vacation villas.
Designer jewelry.
Everything she ever wanted.
What more could she possibly be after?
As if answering the question...
The younger man asked quietly,
"Once the company is yours... are you finally going to divorce him?"
Valeria laughed.
It wasn't a happy laugh.
It was cold.
Cruel.
Heartless.
"Divorce?"
She shook her head.
"Divorced husbands ask questions."
"They fight in court."
"They freeze bank accounts."
She stepped closer until their faces were only inches apart.
"No..."
"I need Alejandro to disappear."
The young man's smile vanished.
"What do you mean... disappear?"
Valeria looked directly into his eyes.
"Accidents happen every day."
"Car crashes."
"Construction failures."
"Heart attacks."
"We only need one."
Alejandro's blood turned to ice.
His breathing stopped.
She wasn't planning a divorce.
She was talking about murder.
The younger man swallowed hard.
"I thought we were only taking the company."
Valeria's expression hardened.
"If Alejandro stays alive..."
"Sofía inherits everything."
"If both disappear..."
She smiled.
"I'm the grieving widow."
"The legal guardian."
"And the sole person controlling every asset."
Silence filled the security room.
Alejandro felt physically ill.
His hands shook so violently he nearly dropped the computer mouse.
For months...
He had believed he was protecting his family from threats outside the mansion.
Never imagining...
The greatest danger had been sleeping beside him every night.
Then, just as he was about to call the police...
A tiny movement on another monitor caught his attention.
The screen displayed the mansion's basement corridor.
A place almost no one ever visited.
Valeria and the younger man were walking toward a heavy steel door hidden behind the wine cellar.
Alejandro frowned.
He had never installed cameras inside that old storage room.
Because...
There was supposed to be nothing there.
Yet Valeria reached into her purse...
Pulled out a key...
Unlocked the steel door...
And disappeared into a secret room beneath his own mansion.
A room...
He never knew existed.
