Chapter 3 - THE AWAKENING OF THE MONSTER

The silence in the grand ballroom was absolute. You could hear the distant hum of the estate’s ventilation system, the faint dripping of a fountain outside, and the frantic, shallow breathing of fifty terrified guests who suddenly realized they were trapped in the cage of an apex predator.
Lucas Falcone did not run. He walked.
Each step of his Italian leather shoes against the marble floor echoed like a gunshot. His dark vest and open-collared shirt gave him an air of dangerous, unrestrained authority. He didn't look at the politicians, he didn't look at the capos, and he didn't look at the shattered champagne flutes on the floor.
His eyes were locked entirely on Bianca’s hand.
Specifically, on the heavy, razor-sharp tailoring shears gripping a blood-soaked handful of midnight-black hair, and the trembling, seven-month-pregnant woman kneeling on the floor beneath her.
"Lucas, darling!" Bianca recovered instantly, pasting a brilliant, breathless smile onto her face as she lowered the shears. She smoothed the front of her red silk gown, stepping over the severed locks of Nadia's hair as if they were mere dust. "Oh, you're just in time. I was merely cleaning out the trash for you. This little maid had the absolute audacity to—"
She didn't finish the sentence.
Lucas didn't stop walking until he was standing directly in front of them. The towering mafia boss towered over Bianca, casting a dark, imposing shadow that completely swallowed her.
"Lucas?" Bianca’s smile finally wavered, a cold knot forming in her stomach as she looked up into his face. There was no warmth there. There was no annoyance. There was only an abyss of absolute, terrifying wrath.
"Drop them," Lucas said. His voice was a low, velvet-wrapped rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.
"What?" Bianca blinked, letting out a nervous, brittle laugh. "Darling, it’s just a servant. She was disrespecting—"
"I said," Lucas repeated, his voice dropping another octave, turning into the sound of grinding tectonic plates, "drop the shears. Now."
Before Bianca could process the command, Lucas’s hand shot out with terrifying speed. He didn't strike her—he didn't have to. With a brutal, iron grip, he wrapped his fingers around Bianca’s wrist and twisted.
A sharp, piercing shriek tore through Bianca’s throat as the heavy tailoring shears slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the marble floor.
"You touch what is mine," Lucas whispered, leaning down so close his lips brushed her ear, "and you sign your own death warrant."
The entire ballroom gasped. Mine? The word hung in the air like a live wire. Society wives clutched their pearls. Capos exchanged pale, terrified glances. Bianca stumbled backward, clutching her bruised wrist, her face draining of all color.
"Lucas... have you lost your mind?" Bianca stammered, tears of humiliation springing to her eyes. "She’s a nobody! A pregnant widow! A debt-slave! You’re humiliating me in front of our entire world for a maid?"
Lucas didn't answer her. He turned his back on his fiancé completely, dismissing her as if she were nothing more than a speck of lint on his jacket.
He dropped to one knee on the cold marble floor.
The guests collectively stopped breathing. The Falcone boss—the untouchable king of the waterfront—was kneeling. Not for a proposal, not for a prayer, but for the servant girl.
Gently, with a tenderness that shocked even his most loyal enforcers, Lucas reached out and picked up the thick, gorgeous lock of midnight-black hair that Bianca had just cut off. He ran his calloused thumb over the silken strands, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek.
Then, he looked up.
Nadia’s tear-filled eyes met his. For three years, she had hidden from him. For three years, she had lived under his roof in disguise, waiting for the right moment to uncover the truth about her murdered husband and her brother's disappearance. She had expected suspicion, anger, or exposure.

What she didn't expect was the raw, burning devastation burning in the eyes of the man the world called a monster.
"Nadia," Lucas murmured, his voice cracking just a fraction—a sound no one in this room had ever heard in their lives. "Did she hurt you?"
