Chapter 4 - The Dowry of WarThe sun was barely cresting the horizon when the heavy oak doors of the Marquetti estate opened once more. Outside, parked in a neat semicircle, were five black town cars bearing the crest of the Falconee syndicate.

Don Salvatore Falconee—patriarch of the family, frail in appearance but venomous in reputation—stepped out of the lead vehicle, leaning heavily on a carved ebony cane. Behind him stood a dozen heavily armed guards.

Adrienne walked down the front steps alone, his hands shoved casually into his pockets. Behind him, standing on the porch under the cold morning light, were Matteo, Vivien (still in her ruined wedding gown), and Clara, who had been given a clean coat to keep off the dawn chill.

"Adrienne, my boy," Salvatore rasped, his voice like dry leaves scraping across concrete. "There seems to be a terrible misunderstanding. My brother Aldo tells me he was detained last night over a foolish dispute. We’ve come to collect him and escort the bride home for the traditional post-wedding rites."

Adrienne stopped ten feet away from the old man. He didn't smile. He didn't offer a handshake.

"Your brother didn't have a dispute, Salvatore," Adrienne said clearly, his voice carrying across the silent gravel driveway.

With a flick of Adrienne's fingers, Matteo stepped forward from the porch, dragging a heavily battered figure behind him. Aldo Falconee was thrown face-first into the dirt at Salvatore’s feet, his hands still bound behind his back, his nose broken and clothes soaked in dried blood.

Salvatore’s eyes narrowed into slits. The facade of grandfatherly warmth vanished in an instant. "What is the meaning of this outrage?"

"The meaning is simple," Adrienne replied, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "Your brother tried to put a bullet through my spine at my own wedding reception. He admitted to the dock ambush last year. He brought war to my doorstep under the guise of family."

Salvatore’s guards instantly unholstered their weapons, the sharp click-clack of safety switches echoing in the morning air. Matteo and the Marquetti snipers positioned on the roof instantly mirrored them, locking laser sights onto the chests of the Falconee men. A bloodbath was only a heartbeat away.

"You have no proof that holds up outside your own walls," Salvatore hissed, trembling with rage. "Release him, Adrienne, or this driveway will run red with your blood before the hour is out."

"Proof?" A calm, clear voice cut through the tension.

Clara stepped down from the porch, walking past Adrienne until she stood right beside him, looking directly into the furious eyes of Don Salvatore. In her hand, she held a small, heavy gold ring with a folded-wing bird emblem.

"I have the proof," Clara said coldly. "And I have the diary from Aldo’s safe house detailing every payoff, every hitman, and every bribe your family paid to cover up the dock massacre. It’s currently being uploaded to every federal prosecutor and rival syndicate boss in the Tri-State area on a timed delay. If either of us doesn't walk away from this gate alive... the whole world learns how the Falconees do business."
