Chapter 6 - The Golden CageTwo weeks had passed since the disastrous wedding, and the Marquetti estate had transformed into an armed fortress. Guards patrolled the perimeter twenty-four hours a day, laser tripwires laced the gardens, and the atmosphere inside the mansion was thick with suspicion.

In the east wing—a sprawling suite of rooms overlooking the crashing waves of the bay—Clara stood before a massive floor-to-ceiling mirror. She wore a tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit that cost more than her entire family had earned in a decade. Her hair, once kept in a messy braid for scrubbing floors, was now cropped and styled with sharp precision.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

"Enter," Clara said.

The door swung open to reveal Eleanor Marquetti, Adrienne’s formidable, ice-cold mother. The older woman stepped into the room, her diamond-encrusted rings flashing in the chandelier light, her face a mask of bitter resentment.

"You've flown high very fast, little bird," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with venom. "From scrubbing the scullery floor to sleeping down the hall from my son. Don't mistake Adrienne's temporary fascination for power. A maid is a maid, no matter what clothes you drape over her."

Clara turned slowly from the mirror, her hands clasped behind her back. She didn't cower the way she used to when Eleanor yelled at her over a misplaced teacup.

"Mrs. Marquetti," Clara said, her tone smooth and chillingly polite. "If I recall correctly, it was your 'temporary fascination' with cutting corners that allowed an assassin to waltz into your son's wedding reception through the back gate. If I were you, I’d be thanking me for keeping your only son’s brains off your designer rug."

Eleanor’s face flushed a furious, mottled crimson. She stepped forward, raising her hand to deliver a sharp slap across Clara’s face.

Before Eleanor’s fingers could even come close, Clara’s hand shot out like lightning, catching the older woman’s wrist in an iron grip and twisting it just enough to bring a gasp of pain to Eleanor’s lips.

"Don't," Clara whispered, leaning in close, her eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying authority. "The days of you swinging at me in the hallways are over. Adrienne gave me the keys to the intelligence wing. I know every skeleton in this family's closet—including yours."

Eleanor snatched her wrist back, rubbing it furiously, her eyes wide with shock and pure hatred. "You arrogant little bitch. Adrienne will throw you out the moment he tires of your games."

"Let him try," Clara replied with a cool smile. "Until then... stay out of my way."
