Chapter 9 - The Final GambitJust as Matteo’s finger tightened on the knife handle, the heavy security alarm across the entire estate let out a piercing, blood-curdling screech.

WEE-WOO! WEE-WOO! WEE-WOO!

Red emergency strobe lights flashed to life along the hallways. Downstairs, the heavy boom of an exterior gate being blown open rattled the windows of the east wing.

Matteo’s head snapped toward the door in momentary confusion. "What the hell...?"

It was all the opening Clara needed.

Instead of pulling away from the knife, Clara threw her entire body weight backward, driving her shoulder hard into Matteo’s chest while slamming the desk drawer shut on his hand. Matteo grunted in pain, his grip on the knife slipping.

Clara scrambled out of the chair, rolling across the Persian rug as Matteo cursed, drawing his own pistol. But before he could aim, the bedroom door was kicked entirely off its hinges with a tremendous crash.

Adrienne Marquetti stood in the doorway.

His face was a mask of apocalyptic fury. In each hand, he held a customized Sig Sauer, and behind him stood half a dozen heavily armed loyal guards with their weapons raised.

Adrienne took one look at the blood on Clara’s neck, then at Matteo standing over the desk with a gun in his hand. The temperature in the room dropped to absolute zero.

"Matteo," Adrienne said. His voice wasn't loud, but every man in the room flinched at the sheer demonic weight of it. "Explain."

Matteo lowered his weapon slowly, his face twisting into a bitter, desperate smirk. "You're too late, boss. The Falconees are already through the gates. And your precious little maid found out the truth—we’ve been running this city behind your back for years."

"I know," Adrienne said softly.

Matteo’s smirk faltered. "What?"

"I knew for three weeks," Adrienne stepped further into the room, his eyes dead and unblinking. "I just needed to know who your buyer was. I needed you to step out into the light so I could cut the head off the snake permanently."

Before Matteo could raise his gun to fire, two deafening cracks echoed in the confined space of the suite.

Matteo’s chest exploded in a crimson bloom. He stumbled backward, his eyes wide with utter shock, before collapsing hard onto the hardwood floor, lifeless before he even hit the ground.
