Chapter 4 - The Poisoned LedgerI stared at him, my heart doing erratic backflips. The fear that had consumed me all night suddenly gave way to a hot, electric tension that filled the space between us.

Without thinking, I reached out and gently touched his cheek. His stubble was rough against my fingertips. Sal closed his eyes, leaning into my touch like a man starving for warmth.

"You're bleeding," I murmured softly. "Let me fix your shoulder first."

Sal smiled weakly, retrieving a first-aid kit from the adjoining bathroom. He peeled off his ruined jacket and ripped open his soaked dress shirt, revealing a broad, muscular chest covered in light scars—enduring marks of a violent life I was only beginning to comprehend.

My breath hitched. I took a piece of antiseptic gauze and gently dabbed at the bullet graze on his shoulder. He flinched slightly, but his gaze never left my face.

"You're remarkably brave, Elena Morrison," he whispered. "Most women would have fainted in that alley."

"I was too terrified to faint," I admitted, wrapping a clean white bandage tightly around his arm. "Besides, I couldn't leave Steve behind. He's probably flattened under glass right now."

A genuine, rich laugh bubbled out of Sal's chest—a sound so warm it made me forget the blood on the floor downstairs.

"I'll buy you a hundred succulents when this is over," he promised.

"I don't want a hundred plants, Sal," I said, meeting his dark eyes as I finished tying the bandage. "I want the truth. What was in that envelope? What is this ledger you hijacked?"

Sal's smile vanished, replaced by the calculating sternness of a Mafia Don. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out the thick white envelope he had managed to retrieve from my apartment before the gunfight.

He opened it, pulling out a black USB drive encased in high-grade steel.

"This drive contains the financial records of the entire Syndicate," Sal explained. "For twenty years, Vincenzo has been laundering human trafficking and illegal weapons money through offshore shell companies. But more importantly... this drive holds the list of corrupted politicians, judges, and federal agents on his payroll."

"If you leak this..." I whispered, realizing the scale of his plan. "You won't just destroy Vincenzo. You'll collapse the entire East Coast underworld."

"That was always the goal," Sal said darkly. "I didn't come back to take over the Moretti crime empire, Elena. I came back to burn it to the ground. Every last piece of it."

"Then why didn't you hand it to the FBI tonight?"

"Because there's a mole inside the Federal Bureau," Sal revealed, his jaw tightening. "Vincenzo's primary asset is a high-ranking informant inside the Department of Justice. If I upload this blindly, the file will be wiped, and Vincenzo will walk free forever. I need to decrypt the mole's identity first."

He plugged the drive into a sleek, military-grade laptop sitting on his desk. Lines of green code began cascading down the dark screen at staggering speeds.

I stood beside him, watching the data stream. My two years of managing high-level corporate data for Sal's firm kicked in.

"Wait," I said, pointing at a line of repeating hex codes. "Stop right there."

Sal paused the decryption sequence. "What is it?"

"That encryption pattern," I said, my brow furrowing as I leaned closer. "I've seen that routing protocol before. That's not a government firewall. That's a private server domain."

Sal looked up at me, surprised. "Are you sure?"

"I set up our company's private server network six months ago, Sal! I'd recognize that IP configuration anywhere," I insisted. "The mole isn't sitting in an FBI office in Washington. The mole is inside our corporate office in Manhattan."

Sal’s eyes darkened with a lethal realization. "Someone inside my own inner circle has been feeding Vincenzo my movements."

Before he could process the betrayal, the mansion's power suddenly cut out.

The room plunged into pitch-black darkness.
