Chapter 1 - The Toast That Turned to Ash

The flash of the camera phone captured the exact millisecond Brandon Miller lifted his crystal glass of vintage champagne. In the background, downtown Chicago sparkled through the floor-to-ceiling windows of The Grandview, an elite restaurant where tables cost thousands of dollars and reservations took months to secure. Adelaide, his mother, beamed under the warm amber restaurant lights, her diamond tennis bracelet catching every gleam. Courtney, his sister, was already filming a TikTok, swaying to the ambient jazz music while holding a plate piled high with king crab legs.

"To the continuation of the Miller legacy!" Brandon announced to the table, his voice loud enough to turn heads at adjacent tables. "And to freedom! Another generation of strength, unbothered by weakness!"

The table erupted into cheers. Clinking glasses chimed in harmony. Courtney immediately tapped her screen to upload the live story with the caption: Celebrating our new addition! Family over everything. 🍾✨

Brandon took a triumphant sip of the expensive bubbly, feeling like the king of the world. He had pulled it off. He had ditched a crying, whining wife in a sterile hospital room, dodged the awkwardness of postpartum exhaustion, and secured his rightful place at the center of attention where he belonged.

Then, his phone buzzed violently in his tailored suit pocket.

He ignored it. Probably the hospital billing department or some automated reminder. But the buzzing didn't stop. It vibrated again, a relentless, frantic pulse that rattled against his thigh.

Beside him, Adelaide noticed his frown. "What is it, sweetheart? Is the hospital bugging you about discharge papers?"

"Probably," Brandon muttered, pulling the phone out to dismiss the notification.

He swiped the screen to clear the alert, expecting a standard text. Instead, his banking app flashed a glaring red banner across the OLED display: ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT TEMPORARILY FROZEN. CONTACT YOUR INSTITUTION.

Brandon blinked, thinking it was a glitch. He tapped his primary checking account—the one where his salary and most importantly, Elena’s quarterly corporate distributions were deposited.

Balance: $0.00.

A cold sweat instantly broke out across the back of his neck. He tapped his high-tier credit card app. Card Locked. He switched to his corporate AMEX. Declined.

"Brandon? You look pale. Did the nurse text you a photo of the kid?" Courtney asked, leaning over with her phone. "Oh, wait, let me see!"

"Hold on," Brandon snapped, his voice cracking slightly. He opened his digital wallet, trying to load his transit pass or his Uber app to check the white SUV parked three blocks away.

Error code 403: Device authorization revoked.

"Brandon, are you okay?" Adelaide's smile faltered, her sharp eyes narrowing. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

Before Brandon could answer, the restaurant’s sommelier approached their table with a practiced, polite smile, holding a fresh bottle of reserve wine. "Excuse me, Mr. Miller? I’m sorry to interrupt your celebration, but your card was just declined at the main terminal when we tried to process the open tab for your appetizer round. Would you like to use another form of payment?"

Every head at the table turned toward Brandon. Courtney lowered her phone, her smile vanishing.

Brandon swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. He fumbled with his leather wallet, pulling out a backup plastic card—a joint card tied to an account his mother supposedly managed. He handed it to the sommelier with a forced, trembling laugh. "Must be a fraud alert. Try this one."

The sommelier slid the card through the handheld terminal. A harsh, electronic beep echoed through the tense silence.

DECLINED - ISSUER LOCK.

The sommelier’s polite smile strained. "I'm sorry, sir. That one didn't go through either."

Brandon's phone buzzed one last time. It wasn't an app notification. It was a direct call from an unknown, restricted number. With shaking fingers, he pressed accept, bringing the phone to his ear without uttering a word.

"Brandon..."

Elena’s voice came through the speaker. It wasn't the broken, weeping whisper from the hospital bed. It was calm, steady, and chillingly cold.

"What... what did you do?" Brandon whispered, every ounce of his usual arrogance instantly evaporating into thin air. "None of our cards work. The SUV won't start. Everything is locked."

Elena didn't raise her voice. She didn't scream or demand an explanation.

"Figure it out," she said softly.

And then, she hung up.
