Chapter 5 - Dawn of the New Regime

While Brandon and his furious family spent the remainder of the night huddled in the cramped lobby of a roadside motel—having finally convinced a sympathetic desk clerk to let them pay cash using a frayed twenty-dollar bill Adelaide had hidden in her purse—the penthouse suite on the forty-second floor was an oasis of absolute peace.
The morning sun rose over Lake Michigan, casting a brilliant, golden glow across the skyline of Chicago. Inside the nursery, the air smelled faintly of lavender and baby lotion.
Elena sat in a plush velvet armchair by the window, cradling Maya against her shoulder. The baby was sleeping soundly, wrapped in a soft, organic cotton blanket—far superior to the cheap, tacky pink polyester outfit Adelaide had sneered at the day before.
A soft knock sounded at the double doors of the suite.
"Come in," Elena said softly.
Mr. Henderson entered, carrying a fresh cup of artisan coffee and a thick leather binder containing overnight case filings. He looked impeccably sharp, as though he hadn't spent the night coordinating a multi-jurisdictional legal blitz across three different financial institutions.
"Good morning, Mrs. Miller. And a very good morning to you, young lady," Henderson said, offering a warm, grandfatherly smile toward the baby before turning his attention to Elena. "How did you sleep?"
"Better than I have in three years," Elena replied honestly, taking a sip of the coffee Henderson had thoughtfully ordered for her. "What's the status?"
Henderson opened his leather binder and slid a summary sheet onto the small side table. "As of 6:00 AM, the formal petition for dissolution of marriage, total asset forfeiture, and sole legal and physical custody of Maya has been officially filed in the Cook County Circuit Court. Because all major assets—including the startup capital for Brandon’s media firm and his personal investment accounts—were legally funded by your pre-marital trust and documented corporate loans, our position is airtight."
"What about his job?" Elena asked.
"I spoke directly with the CEO of Apex Media at 5:30 AM," Henderson said smoothly. "As it turns out, Brandon’s position as Vice President was contingent upon a corporate guarantee and partnership backing provided by your family foundation. When I informed the CEO that the backing had been permanently withdrawn due to gross personal misconduct and abandonment of a postpartum mother, Brandon was terminated for cause before the morning shift even began."
Elena stared out at the sprawling city view, watching the morning traffic crawl along Lake Shore Drive. She felt no anger, no bitterness—only a profound, liberating clarity. For years, she had carried a grown man who contributed nothing but dead weight to her life, convincing herself that marriage meant enduring disrespect in silence.
One night had shattered that illusion forever.
"He tried to call my phone forty-two times overnight," Elena noted casually, her phone lying face down on the table, completely silent on Do Not Disturb.

"He will try a great deal more before the day is through," Henderson replied. "His mother has already contacted three different high-priced divorce attorneys, but none of them are willing to take his case on retainer once they ran a preliminary asset search and realized he doesn't own a single dime. He is legally, financially, and professionally insolvent."
"Good," Elena said quietly. "Let him experience what it feels like to have to figure it out."
