Chapter 8 - A New Horizon

Two weeks later, the penthouse suite was filled with the soft, warm light of a Saturday afternoon.
The moving boxes had all been unpacked. The nursery was fully decorated, glowing with soft pastel tones, floating cloud mobiles, and a row of beautiful, hand-picked pink outfits hanging neatly in the closet—none of which had been chosen by Adelaide.
Elena sat on the balcony overlooking the stunning expanse of Lake Michigan, holding a cup of herbal tea in one hand while gently rocking Maya in her arms. The baby was awake now, her bright, curious eyes blinking up at her mother with absolute, unconditional trust.
Life hadn't stopped. In fact, it had finally truly begun.
Without the dead weight of a toxic marriage, fraudulent debts, and ungrateful in-laws draining her energy, Elena felt lighter than she had in years. Her private equity firm was thriving under her direct leadership, her investment portfolio was expanding into new tech ventures, and every single resource she owned was dedicated entirely to building a secure, powerful, and loving empire for her daughter.
A gentle notification chimed on her phone lying on the patio table.
Elena glanced down at the screen. It was an automated bank alert confirming the final closing balance transfer from the frozen joint accounts—the remaining funds legally apportioned back to her sole corporate trust.
Beneath it was a brief news notification from a local Chicago tabloid: Former tech executive spotted boarding Greyhound bus bound for undisclosed western state, carrying single duffel bag.

Elena offered a faint, peaceful smile. She locked her phone, turned away from the screen, and looked back down at Maya.
"We’re going to be just fine, sweetheart," Elena whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her daughter’s forehead as the Chicago wind carried them forward into a bright, boundless future.
