Chapter 6 - Federal Interventions and Family Lies

The operating room lights seemed to hum louder, vibrating inside my skull.

“Federal property?” I stared at the man in the charcoal suit, my hands still trembling in my sterile blue gloves. “What are you talking about? That thing was inside my daughter’s body! It was rotting her from the inside out!”

Agent Vance stepped closer, casting a cold, calculating glance down at Maya, who was still deeply unconscious under anesthesia, before turning his gaze sharply onto me.

“Mrs. Thorne, your husband, Robert Thorne, is currently being detained in the hospital parking garage,” Agent Vance said smoothly, pulling a small tablet from his breast pocket. “He triggered an automatic alert on our secure network the moment he accessed hospital records using his corporate clearance badge.”

My jaw dropped. “Corporate... clearance? Robert works as a senior logistics analyst for an import-export firm! What does he have to do with Homeland Security?”

“Mr. Thorne doesn't just analyze logistics,” Agent Vance replied, tapping the screen of his tablet. “He is a mid-level contractor for a private defense intelligence network that collaborates with federal cybersecurity initiatives. And six months ago, when our division needed a clean, untraceable test subject for a prototype biometric surveillance chip designed to monitor high-risk intelligence assets in the field...”

Agent Vance paused, his eyes locking onto mine with chilling indifference.

“...your husband volunteered his own household.”

The words hit me like a physical blow. The room tilted violently. I grabbed the edge of the stainless-steel instrument table to keep from collapsing.

“No,” I breathed, shaking my head fiercely. “No, that’s impossible. Robert is just cheap. He’s obsessed with money, with budgets, with cutting corners! He’s not a spy... he’s just a miserable, cold-hearted accountant!”

“Greed and compliance are two sides of the same coin, Mrs. Thorne,” Agent Vance said coldly. “The defense contractor offered a quarter-million-dollar payout for a clean, compliant minor subject to test long-term physiological integration of our bio-surveillance units. Your husband had massive gambling debts hidden in offshore accounts. He traded his own daughter’s body for a financial bailout.”

The horror of it washed over me in a suffocating wave.

All those dinners where Robert sat silently at the end of the table, staring at his phone while Maya withered away. All those dismissive remarks about her being dramatic, lazy, or a financial drain. It wasn't just neglect. It was a cover-up. He knew why she was in pain. He knew why her stomach was failing. He was watching the clock, waiting for the trial period to end so he could cash out his blood money.

“Where is he?” I whispered, my voice turning to ice.

“Holding facility,” Agent Vance said. “And right now, your daughter is a material witness in a federal espionage investigation.”

“She is not a witness!” I screamed, finally tearing off my surgical mask and throwing it to the floor. “She is a victim! And I am her mother!”

Before Agent Vance could signal the guards to hold me back, the heart monitor beside Maya’s bed let out a sharp, continuous, high-pitched squeal.

Beep—

A flat, unbroken line stretched across the digital screen.

Maya’s body arched slightly, and the surgical monitor flashed red.

“Code Blue! Crash cart!” Dr. Lawson roared, shoving past the federal agent as all the alarms in the room erupted at once.
