Chapter 5 - The Family Fractures

Back at the lake house, the illusion of the perfect Harrison family was burning to the ground.

Aunt Caroline sat on the patio, speaking in hushed, trembling tones into her phone with child protective services, detailing years of whispered secrets, suspicious bruises that were brushed off with excuses, and an atmosphere of absolute terror that Robert and Jennifer enforced with money and intimidation.

Inside, Jennifer was pacing the living room, wringing her hands so hard her knuckles were stark white.

"It’s a conspiracy!" Jennifer shouted at the remaining relatives, her voice bordering on hysterical. "Caroline is trying to destroy us! The hospital is incompetent! Olivia has always hated how much attention Tyler gets! She orchestrated this whole thing just to ruin his college scholarship!"

Uncle Mark, who had been staring quietly into his half-empty beer glass all evening, finally stood up. The chair scraped loudly against the floor.

"Jennifer, shut up," Mark said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

Jennifer stopped pacing, staring at him in shock. "Mark? Are you siding with them too?"

"I watched him push her," Mark said, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "For years, Jennifer. We all saw bits and pieces of it. Every time she cried out, every time she limp-walked into a room, we looked away because it was easier. Because Robert pays for our golf memberships, because your family dinners are comfortable, because we didn't want to rock the boat."

He grabbed his car keys off the kitchen island.

"We didn't just let Tyler break her back tonight," Mark continued, his eyes welling with tears. "We broke her back a long time ago by letting him get away with it."
