Chapter 12 - The Phoenix Rises

Spring returned to Route 9 with an explosion of vibrant green foliage and blooming wildflowers that carpeted the forest floor around Baldric’s rustic bungalow.

The old red pickup truck sat gleaming in the driveway, freshly washed and waxed, its engine purring with quiet, deceptive power.

On the wide wooden back porch, Arianne sat in a comfortable rocking chair, sipping a cup of steaming herbal tea while watching four-year-old Gideon chase a golden retriever across the sprawling lawn. The dark days of bruises, fear, and midnight terror felt like a distant, distorted nightmare from another lifetime.

She had enrolled in night classes to finish her degree in architecture—a passion she had abandoned years ago under Derek’s suffocating control. Her designs were already winning regional competitions, submitted anonymously through an Ironwood subsidiary, though she insisted on earning every accolade entirely on her own merit.

Footsteps echoed on the wooden steps.

Baldric walked out onto the porch, carrying a small wooden toy truck he had carved by hand in his backyard workshop. He handed it down to Gideon, who squealed with delight and ran off to show the dog.

Baldric pulled up a matching wooden chair beside his daughter and sat down, letting out a long, contented sigh.

Arianne turned her head, smiling warmly at her father. She reached out and placed her hand over his calloused, grease-stained knuckles.

“You know, Dad,” Arianne said softly, her eyes twinkling with amusement. “For a retired mechanic, you sure know how to throw a wrench into things.”

Baldric let out a low, rumbling chuckle, a spark of pride warming his deep-set eyes.

“Like I told you, sweetheart,” Baldric murmured, squeezing her hand gently as the golden afternoon sun bathed them in an unbreakable, radiant light. “When something’s broken at the core, you don't patch it up with lies. You tear it down to the foundation, and you build something real.”
