Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Within four hours of Derek’s arrest, the Vance family empire dissolved faster than a sugar cube in boiling water.

The media frenzy was biblical. Helicopters hovered over the Vance mansion, broadcasting live feeds of federal marshals slapping foreclosure notices across the massive iron gates. Reporters dug up decades of shady land deals, tax evasions, and corporate malfeasance that the Vances had spent millions burying.

Bertha Vance stood on the front steps of her mansion, draped in a designer mink coat, screaming hysterically at a wall of news cameras as federal agents hauled away her antique art collection and luxury sports cars. The illusion of untouchable aristocracy was shattered in broad daylight, replaced by the humiliating reality of absolute ruin.

At the private hospital, Arianne finally opened her eyes.

The bright morning sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting warm golden patterns across the white sheets. For a long moment, she stared blankly at the ceiling, her mind drifting through a hazy fog of trauma and exhaustion.

Then, she felt a warm, heavy hand wrap gently around her bruised fingers.

She turned her head slowly.

Her father was sitting in the plastic chair beside her bed, his head bowed, his shoulders carrying the heavy burden of a man who realized he had almost lost his entire world to his own stubborn silence.

“Dad?” she whispered, her voice cracked and dry.

Baldric looked up, his fierce, terrifying exterior melting away instantly, replaced by the profound, aching tenderness of a father who had fought hell and back for his child. He reached out with his other hand and gently brushed a strand of hair away from her forehead.

“I’m right here, sweetheart,” Baldric said, his voice thick with emotion. “You’re safe now. No one will ever hurt you again. I promise.”

Arianne let out a long, shuddering breath, a single tear escaping down her cheek, not of sorrow, but of an overwhelming, profound safety. “How... how did you do all this? Derek said you were just a mechanic.”

A faint, weary smile touched the corners of Baldric’s mouth.

“I spent my whole life building engines, Arianne,” he said softly, squeezing her hand. “Sometimes, to fix what’s broken, you have to tear the whole machine down to the bedrock and start over.”
