Chapter 6 - A New Dawn at Route 9

Two weeks later, the crisp autumn wind swept across the quiet gravel driveway of the small bungalow off Route 9.

The modest white-painted house looked peaceful, surrounded by tall pine trees and the quiet rustle of falling leaves. In the driveway sat Baldric’s trusty, battered red pickup truck, its side panels still splattered with dried mud and grease.

A sleek black medical transport van pulled quietly up the drive.

Baldric stepped out onto the front porch, wiping his hands on a clean shop rag. The back doors of the van opened, and a nurse gently helped Arianne step down onto the solid earth.

She looked significantly stronger. The dark bruises around her wrists had faded into faint yellowish shadows, and though she still walked slowly, leaning slightly on her father’s arm, there was a spark of life back in her eyes that hadn't been there in years.

Beside her, holding her hand tightly, was four-year-old Gideon, looking up at his grandfather with wide, curious eyes.

“Is this our new home, Grandpa?” Gideon asked, pointing at the cozy bungalow.

Baldric knelt down on one knee, coming eye-to-eye with his grandson, and smiled warmly—a genuine, radiant smile that he hadn't shown in decades.

“It’s home, buddy,” Baldric said, ruffle the boy’s hair. “And nobody is ever going to take it away from us.”

Arianne walked up beside her father, looking out over the peaceful trees, breathing in the crisp, clean air of freedom. She leaned her head gently against Baldric’s sturdy shoulder.

“Thank you, Dad,” she whispered.

Baldric wrapped his strong, calloused arm around his daughter, pulling her close against his chest.

“We’re home, sweetheart,” Baldric said softly as the sun dipped below the horizon, bathing them in the warm, unbreakable light of a brand-new beginning.
