Chapter 5 - Shadows in the MountainsThe heavy iron gates of the Cole estate in the Smoky Mountains swung open automatically, admitting the armored convoy into the heavily wooded, secluded property. Nestled deep among ancient pines and towering cliffs, the sprawling stone mansion was a fortress designed to withstand anything short of a military siege.

Inside the back of the black SUV, three-year-old Sofia stirred sleepily against Rosa’s shoulder, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

"Are we home?" the little girl murmured, her eyelids heavy.

"Not quite, sweet girl," Rosa whispered, her voice trembling as she stroked Sofia’s dark hair. She looked out the window at the towering stone walls and armed security guards patrolling the perimeter. She knew instantly that they hadn't escaped the storm—they had simply stepped into a different kind of cage.

The SUV rolled to a halt beneath the grand stone portico.

The door opened, and Ethan stood there in the pouring rain, refusing an umbrella. He reached inside, his large, powerful hands gently lifting Sofia from Rosa’s arms.

Sofia blinked sleepily, looking up into the unfamiliar face of the billionaire. For a second, she stiffened, clutching Rosa’s cardigan. But then, as if sensing something familiar in the dark, intense eyes looking down at her, she relaxed slightly and rested her head against Ethan’s broad shoulder.

Ethan’s breath hitched. A tremor ran through his massive frame. For the first time in eight months, the crushing weight in his chest lifted just an inch.

"Bring Rosa inside," Ethan instructed a security operative without taking his eyes off his daughter. "Give her the east wing guest suite. And nobody leaves this property without my direct authorization."

"Ethan—please," Rosa pleaded, stepping out of the vehicle into the rain. "You can keep me here, you can lock me away, but don't keep me away from her. She doesn't know you. If you wake her up in a strange place surrounded by armed guards, she’s going to be terrified."

Ethan paused on the grand stone steps. He looked back at the woman who had raised his daughter for the last eight months—the woman who was simultaneously his greatest enemy and his child’s savior.

"You stay in the house, Rosa," Ethan said coldly. "You have your own room. But make no mistake: you are not her mother. As of tonight, you are an employee under protective custody. Do not forget your place."

He turned and walked through the heavy oak doors, leaving Rosa standing alone in the freezing rain, watching the heavy barrier close between her and the little girl she loved as her own.
