Chapter 3 - Corporate Warfare

The private conference room on the 40th floor of the Sherman Tower overlooked a stormy skyline. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, casting long, eerie shadows across the polished mahogany table.

At 5:55 AM, Elijah pushed open the double doors. He had left Toby resting comfortably under heavy guard at the hospital, entrusting his care to Gabriel and Fiona. Now, he wore a new expression—not the frantic panic of a terrified father, but the cold, calculating fury of a corporate predator cornered by wolves.

Seated around the table were the core members of the board: stern-faced executives who owed their positions to Elijah’s father, and leading them all was Marcus Vance, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with an unsettling, calm smile.

"Elijah," Marcus said smoothly, standing up to gesture toward the empty seat at the head of the table. "We didn't expect you to make it, given your family... situation. But I suppose business waits for no one."

Elijah didn't take the seat. Instead, he walked slowly to the end of the table, leaning his palms against the dark wood. His eyes swept across the room, locking onto every single director.

"Cut the corporate theater, Marcus," Elijah said, his voice flat and lethal. "You called an emergency session to oust me based on a server breach that you orchestrated."

A murmur rippled through the room. One of the older board members, Arthur Pendelton, frowned deeply. "Elijah, watch your tone. Marcus presented us with emergency documentation showing severe mismanagement of the Bio-Tech subsidiary, coupled with a federal investigation into unauthorized human trials involving Aethel-C."

"A federal investigation that hasn't even been filed yet," Elijah countered sharply, pulling a slim metallic drive from his pocket and dropping it onto the table. "Unless, of course, Marcus wrote the complaint himself."

Marcus didn't flinch. He simply smiled, folding his hands neatly in front of him. "That’s a very serious accusation, Elijah. Where is your proof? The server logs are wiped. The clinical trials are flagged as compromised. As of this morning, Sherman Bio-Tech’s stock has plummeted by 22% in pre-market trading."

Marcus leaned forward, lowering his voice. "And let's not forget the PR disaster. Your mistress—excuse me, your fiancée, Cassandra Kelley—was just arrested at St. Jude’s Hospital for administering an experimental chemical to your four-year-old son. The headlines are already writing themselves: Billionaire Heir Poisoned in Domestic Feud. The board has lost confidence in your leadership."

Elijah stared at Marcus, feeling the crushing weight of the conspiracy closing in around him. Marcus had planned everything. The fake bank statements six months ago to isolate Elijah from Naomi; the framing of Cassandra; the theft of the trial data; and the hostile takeover of his empire.

"You think you’ve won," Elijah said softly.

"I know I’ve won," Marcus replied with a cold grin. "By 6:15 AM, you’ll be voted out as CEO, and I will assume interim control of Sherman Enterprises."

Suddenly, the heavy conference room doors flew open with a loud bang.

A tall figure stepped into the room, wearing a crisp designer trench coat, raindrops glistening on her shoulders. It wasn't a corporate lawyer, and it wasn't a police officer.
