Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Penthouse

With Marcus Vance behind bars and the federal investigation dismantling the conspiracy from the root, the immediate corporate crisis was averted. Sherman Enterprises’ stock rebounded sharply by noon as news of the internal corruption broke, portraying Elijah not as a failing executive, but as the victim of an elaborate inside job.
Yet, as evening fell over the city once again, Elijah felt no sense of triumph.
He sat in the dimly lit living room of his penthouse apartment high above the city. The rain had stopped, leaving the skyscrapers glistening under a blanket of neon lights. On the coffee table lay the divorce settlement papers he had signed six months ago, alongside a freshly printed report from the hospital confirming that four-year-old Toby had made a full recovery and was resting peacefully in a secure recovery suite.
The front door chimed softly.
Elijah stood up quickly, his heart hammering against his ribs. He walked down the long hallway and pulled open the heavy oak door.
It wasn't a courier. It wasn't a police officer.
It was Naomi.
She wore a simple dark wool coat, her hair tied back in a neat ponytail, holding a small manila envelope. She looked tired, but her eyes were as steady and piercing as ever.
"Naomi," Elijah breathed, his voice barely audible. "Please... come in."
Naomi stepped past him into the luxurious foyer, but she didn't take off her coat. She didn't look around at the expensive art or the sprawling view. She simply placed the envelope on the console table.
"I dropped by the hospital to check on Toby one last time," Naomi said quietly. "He's sleeping. The residual toxins are completely cleared from his system. He’ll be discharged tomorrow morning."
"Thank you," Elijah said, stepping closer, though he kept a respectful distance. "Words... words aren't enough, Naomi. For what you did for my son, and for what you did today in the boardroom... I owe you my life."
"You don't owe me anything, Elijah," Naomi replied, turning to face him. "I saved Toby because he is an innocent child who didn't deserve to be caught in the crossfire of your corporate enemies. And I exposed Marcus because justice demanded it. It had nothing to do with us."
Elijah swallowed hard, the sharp pain in his chest intensifying. "Us... can there ever be an 'us' again, Naomi?"
Naomi looked at him, a faint, melancholic smile touching the corners of her lips. "Six months ago, Elijah, you looked at a folder of fabricated papers and decided that the woman you married—the woman who stood by you when you were building this empire from the ground up—was nothing more than a gold digger. You didn't give me a hearing. You didn't give me a chance. You threw me out to the wolves."
"I was wrong," Elijah whispered, his voice breaking as he took a step forward, unable to help himself. "I was a blind, arrogant fool. I let jealousy and paranoia destroy the only real thing I ever had."
"Being wrong is a mistake," Naomi said softly, her voice carrying an unshakable resolve. "Being easily manipulated because of your own hubris is a fatal flaw. You live in a world of predators, Elijah. And until you learn to trust with your mind and your heart, everyone around you is just a pawn or a target."
She turned toward the door, her hand resting on the brass handle.
"Wait," Elijah pleaded, his voice trembling. "What's in the envelope?"
Naomi paused, looking back over her shoulder. "That's your copy of the finalized property settlement audit. The financial investigators cleared my name completely. Every cent in my bank account was earned through my own medical practice and research patents. I never touched a dime of your fortune, Elijah."
She pulled the door open, the cool hallway air rushing in between them.
"Goodbye, Elijah. Take good care of your son."
The door clicked shut.
Elijah stood alone in the vast, silent penthouse, the heavy silence echoing in his ears. But before he could sink into despair, his phone suddenly buzzed violently on the marble table.

He picked it up. It wasn't a corporate update. It was an alert from the hospital’s security command center.
Toby's room has been accessed.
