Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN IN MY SHADOW

The fluorescent lights of the ICU hummed, but the quiet inside my chest felt deafening.

Detective Bennett leaned over my bed, her eyes sharp, cold, and calculated. On the crisp white blanket lay three glossy 8x10 photographs.

In the first photo, Jason was standing in our driveway, holding my clearly labeled prescription bottles—the life-saving immunosuppressants I needed to survive my autoimmune disorder.

In the second photo, he was standing at a gas station three miles away. He was handing those exact pill bottles to a blonde woman wearing an oversized trench coat and a dark pair of sunglasses.

In the third photo, the woman had pulled down her sunglasses.

My heart slammed against my ribs so hard I thought my stitches would pop. The woman in the picture wasn't a stranger. She wasn't some random mistress Jason had picked up online.

It was Clara. My twin sister.

Clara, who had vanished five years ago after stealing $50,000 from our parents' estate. Clara, who had cut off all contact, leaving me to bear the legal and financial fallout alone.

"Do you recognize her, Mrs. Vance?" Detective Bennett asked quietly, her pen hovering over her notepad.

"That's... that's my sister," I whispered, my voice raspy from the days of dry vomiting and screaming for help behind deadbolted doors. "She’s been gone for half a decade. Why would Jason... why would he give my medication to her?"

"We ran the license plate of the vehicle she drove away in," Bennett said, flipping a page. "It’s registered to a private medical facility in Switzerland. Mrs. Vance, are you aware that your husband has been making monthly transfers of twelve thousand dollars to an offshore account registered under your sister's maiden name?"

The room seemed to tilt. Twelve thousand dollars a month? Jason was an accountant at a mid-tier firm. He made good money, but not enough to throw around six figures a year without me noticing.

Unless... he wasn't using his money.

"My trust fund," I gasped, the cold realization washing over me like ice water. "My grandfather left me a two-million-dollar health trust. It was locked until my thirty-fifth birthday... or until my death, in which case full power of attorney and the entire estate transfer automatically to my primary caregiver."

Detective Bennett slowly nodded. "Which, according to the documents filed three months ago, is Jason."

They didn't just abandon me to die. It was a synchronized, cold-blooded execution disguised as a tragic accident. Jason's family trip to Europe wasn't a holiday—it was an alibi. Seventy-four days in Europe with his parents and sister would give him a rock-solid, ironclad defense. He would return home to find his poor, sickly wife dead from 'natural complications' due to missing her medication during an unforeseen power outage.

"What do we do now?" I asked, my fists gripping the hospital sheets until my knuckles turned white. Tears of weakness had vanished; a raw, lethal fury was replacing them.

"Officially? You recover, and we file an international arrest warrant through Interpol," Bennett said. "Unusually, though... Jason hasn't turned off his phone. His location is showing he just boarded a flight from London back to the States."

"Wait," I frowned. "He's coming back already? He told me he was staying seventy-four days!"

Bennett’s expression darkened. "That's the mystery, Mrs. Vance. If he intended to leave you to die over seventy-four days, why is he returning after only forty-eight hours?"

The door to my hospital room suddenly burst open. A nurse rushed in, her face pale.

"Detective! You need to see the news right now!"

The nurse hit the power button on the wall-mounted television. The scrolling red banner at the bottom of the screen made my blood freeze:

BREAKING NEWS: INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT 409 FROM LONDON CRASHES IN NORTH ATLANTIC. NO KNOWN SURVIVORS. PASSENGER LIST INCLUDES JASON VANCE.
