Chapter 4 - Unlocking the VaultBy 2:00 a.m., the chaos in Nathan’s minimalist mansion had finally subsided to a steady, quiet hum.

Dr. Elizabeth Vance emerged from the guest suite on the second floor, peeling off her latex gloves and tossing them into a nearby disposal bin. She looked exhausted, but there was a faint, relieved smile playing on her lips.

Nathan was standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall of his living room, staring out at the dark expanse of the bay. He held a glass of scotch in his hand, though he hadn't taken a single sip.

He turned the second he heard Elizabeth’s footsteps.

"How is she?" Nathan asked, his voice tight.

"Iris is physically exhausted, severely malnourished, and has the early stages of a bronchial infection," Elizabeth reported, walking over to the marble kitchen island and pouring herself a glass of water. "We’ve got her on IV fluids, warm saline mists, and heavy antibiotics. She's going to make a full recovery, but she needs weeks of proper nutrition, rest, and emotional stabilization."

Nathan let out a long, slow breath he felt like he’d been holding for hours. "And the cat?"

Elizabeth chuckled softly. "Miraculously, Barnaby is a fighter. His left rear tibia is fractured, and his eyes had a severe bacterial infection that would have blinded him permanently within forty-eight hours. My veterinarian contact came over, set the leg, and flushed his eyes. He’s sleeping right beside Iris in her bed right now. They're both going to be fine."

Nathan nodded, turning back to the window.

"Nathan," Elizabeth said, her tone shifting from clinical to deeply personal as she walked closer to him. "What is going on? You don't just pick up homeless children off the street and turn your guest wing into an emergency ward on a whim. The city is already buzzing. My phone has been vibrating off the hook for the last hour."

Nathan frowned. "What do you mean, buzzing?"

Elizabeth pulled out her smartphone and turned the screen toward him.

The headline on a major local news site blazed in bold, aggressive letters: TECH BILLIONAIRE NATHAN FISHER PULLS MILLION-DOLLAR FUNDING FROM BRIGHT HARBOR GALA AFTER FIERCE CLASH WITH CHAIRMAN JULIAN MALLORY OVER HOMELESS CHILD.

Below the headline was a blurry, high-contrast photo taken by the freelance reporter outside the Fairmont Grand. It showed Nathan kneeling in the dirt, wrapping his coat around Iris, while Julian Mallory stood a few feet away with a face contorted in arrogant disgust.

Already, the comments section was exploding. “Julian Mallory is a fraud! Audit Bright Harbor!” “Who is this little girl? God bless Nathan Fisher for standing up to those elitist snobs!” “Wait, isn't Bright Harbor tied to the city council's real estate development deals? Look deeper!”

Nathan stared at the screen, a cold realization dawning on him.

By pulling his funding and making a scene on camera, he hadn't just made a personal statement—he had kicked over a massive, heavily guarded hornet's nest.

"Julian Mallory isn't just a charity chairman, Nathan," Elizabeth warned quietly, watching his face. "You know that, right? Bright Harbor Children’s Relief is the primary front for the city's downtown commercial expansion project. Millions of dollars in municipal grants flow through that charity every month. If you audit them—or if the press digs into why you pulled your funding—you're going to uncover a lot more than just bad optics."

Nathan’s eyes narrowed. He thought about Julian’s blind panic when the box was discovered. It wasn't just embarrassment over a messy donor exit path.

It was fear.

"My lead software architect, Marcus, is still awake," Nathan said suddenly, setting his untouched glass of scotch down on the table with a sharp clink. "Let's see what else Julian Mallory is hiding behind those velvet dinner jackets."
