Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW ON THE SCREEN

"He is Not a Beggar... He Owns the Ground You Stand On."

The panic inside the lobby was instantaneous. The wealthy clients, realizing they were locked inside a high-security vault disguised as a luxury bank, began slamming their fists against the reinforced glass doors.

"Let us out!" screamed a woman clad in Chanel, her diamonds catching the flashing red emergency lights. "Do you know who my husband is?!"

"Quiet!" Director Garza’s voice boomed over the emergency sirens. He ignored the wealthy hostages and fell to his knees in front of Mateo. The mighty, untouchable director of Alliance Bank was now eye-level with an eight-year-old boy in a faded guayabera.

"Mateo," Garza pleaded, his hands shaking as he held the gold card. "Your grandfather, Don Alejandro... he was the secret co-founder of this entire financial institution. Thirty years ago, he walked away because he discovered what the other board members were doing. He created this sovereign account as a fail-safe. But to stop the drain, we need his physical biometric key. Do you have it?"

Mateo looked at the old leather briefcase.

"My grandfather said the briefcase must never be opened inside the bank," Mateo said, his voice laced with childhood innocence mixed with terrifying gravity. "He said the bank has ears. He said the walls have eyes."

"We don't have time!" Robles shrieked, pointing at the monitor.

$450,000,000

$420,000,000

"If that account hits zero, the legal ownership of Alliance Bank automatically transfers to the consortium in Switzerland! We will lose everything! I will lose my job, my pension!"

"Your pension?" Garza sneered, looking up at Robles with pure disgust. "You pathetic fool. If this account is wiped, the entire Mexican financial market collapses by tomorrow morning. Don Alejandro’s funds back the national currency reserves!"

Garza turned back to Mateo. "Please, child. The hospital where your grandfather is... it is the Angeles Hospital, correct? The board of that hospital is controlled by the very people trying to steal this money. If they wipe this account, they will have no reason to keep him alive. They will pull the plug."

That was the breaking point. Mateo’s eyes flared with a sudden, fierce determination. He placed the cracked leather briefcase on the marble counter.

"The key is not in the briefcase, Mr. Robles," Mateo said, looking directly at the trembling teller. "My grandfather knew you would try to steal it if it was. The key is here."

Mateo reached into his collar and pulled out a small, tarnished silver key hanging from a simple piece of black thread. It was hidden beneath his shirt the entire time.

But before Mateo could hand it to Garza, the bank's main television screen—which usually broadcasted stock market tickers and luxury lifestyle ads—suddenly flickered to life.

The stock charts vanished. In their place appeared a shadowed silhouette of a man sitting in a high-backed leather chair, his face obscured by digital distortion. When he spoke, his voice was modulated, deep and metallic, echoing through the bank's premium surround-sound speakers.

"Director Garza," the voice commanded. "Step away from the boy."

The entire lobby went dead silent. The VIP clients stopped screaming.

"Who is this?" Garza demanded, though his trembling voice betrayed that he already knew the answer.

"We are the Board of Directors of the Genesis Syndicate," the voice replied calmly. "Don Alejandro was a brilliant man, but he was a fool who believed in charity. The five billion dollars in that account does not belong to a dying old man or a peasant boy. It belongs to the future of global finance. If you assist the boy, Garza, your family’s assets will be frozen by 2:00 PM. Your career will end. Your life will be forfeit."

The silhouette on the screen shifted, looking directly at Mateo.

"Mateo. You are a brave boy. But your grandfather is already dead. We disconnected his ventilator five minutes ago."

Mateo’s heart stopped. "No... no, you're lying! He promised me!"

"Check the news, child," the cold voice whispered.
