Chapter 1 - THE TRUTH IN THE LEDGERThe grandfather clock in the private sitting room struck eight times, its heavy chimes echoing through the wainscoting like a heartbeat waiting to stop.

Ronan Blackwood stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the rain streak the dark glass. Inside, Malcolm Reeves applied a cool, antiseptic compress to Ivy’s shoulder. Every time the cold cloth touched her torn flesh, Ivy didn't flinch. She simply stared down at the small, worn leather-bound notebook resting in her lap.

It was not a housekeeping log. It was the financial pulse of the entire Blackwood empire.

"You should have let me handle her, Mr. Blackwood," Emily whispered, still trembling in the corner, her fingers clutching the silver soup spoon as if it were a talisman. "Miss Hale... she told everyone in the kitchen that once she marries you next month, the first thing she’ll do is fire every veteran employee. She said you were too soft on the old guard."

Ronan turned slowly. His eyes were cold enough to freeze fire. "Did she?"

"She didn't just say it," Ivy finally spoke, her voice steady, rich, and carrying a quiet authority that commanded the room. "She signed contracts against your back, Mr. Blackwood. While you were in Zurich securing the shipping lines, Miss Hale and her uncle—Senator Reeves—re-mortgaged three of our prime logistics hubs to fund her personal accounts and her brother's failing real estate ventures."

Malcolm’s hands paused on the compress. He looked up, his weathered face tightening into a mask of pure fury. "The shipping hubs? Those are tied directly to the Grayhaven harbor trusts. If those default..."

"The entire syndicate falls under federal receivership within forty-eight hours," Ivy finished. She opened the ledger to page 214. Every signature was crisp, fraudulent, and countersigned by Vivien Hale. "She thought a plus-size maid who wore an apron and stayed in the shadows wouldn't know how to read corporate asset transfers. She didn't realize that for five years, every document you signed, Mr. Blackwood, crossed my desk for filing before it went to the legal department."

Ronan walked over, pulled up a velvet armchair directly across from Ivy, and sat down. He didn't look at the wound on her shoulder anymore. He looked straight into her eyes—eyes that held no fear, only a terrifying, calculated brilliance.

"You aren't just a maid, Ivy," Ronan said softly, his voice dropping an octave. "Who put you in that kitchen?"

"Your grandfather, on his deathbed," Ivy replied without blinking. "He told me that one day, a wolf in silk would try to tear down everything he built, and that I was the only one with the courage and the brain to keep the foundation from cracking. He was right."

Ronan stared at her for a long, heavy second. Then, a slow, dangerous smile curved his lips.

"Then it's time," Ronan said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Let’s go back to the party. It's time to show them what happens when you strike the heart of the house."
