Chapter 9 - THE ASHES OF THE PASTTwenty minutes later, the wail of police sirens and federal task force vehicles filled the damp Grayhaven air outside Blackwood Estate.

Victor Vance and his surviving mercenaries were dragged out in heavy titanium cuffs, shoved into armored transport vans under the blinding flash of media cameras. Senator Reeves and Vivien Hale were already waiting in custody downtown, their financial empire dismantled piece by piece before the sun could even rise.

Inside the grand library, the dust was settling over the ruined furniture and scattered books.

Ronan stood by the hearth, stoking the dying embers with a poker. His knuckles were bruised, and a shallow graze bled slowly down his left forearm, but he didn't care.

Ivy sat quietly in the velvet armchair near the window, a fresh white bandage secured neatly over her shoulder. A cup of hot, strong black coffee steamed on the table beside her.

Ronan walked over, set the poker down, and knelt on one knee in front of her chair.

"You saved my life tonight, Ivy," Ronan said, his voice unusually raw, stripped of all corporate armor and mob boss menace. "Not just from Victor... but from blindness. I almost let a parasite like Vivien destroy everything my family built, while the only real strength in this house was standing right in front of me."

Ivy looked down at him, her soft features relaxing into a warm, genuine smile. "Your grandfather knew what he was doing when he placed me in that kitchen, Ronan. He knew that true power doesn't come from silk gowns, diamonds, or intimidation. It comes from loyalty, intellect, and knowing how to survive the storm."

Ronan reached out, his calloused hand gently covering hers resting on the armrest. "Then stop calling me Mr. Blackwood."

Ivy tilted her head, her eyes sparkling with quiet amusement. "And what should I call you, boss?"

"Ronan," he murmured, rising slowly to his feet, keeping his hand intertwined with hers. "And you are no longer a maid in this house, Ivy. You are my partner. Equal owner of everything the Blackwood name represents—past, present, and future."

Ivy didn't pull her hand away. Instead, she stood up to meet him eye-to-eye, her presence radiating an undeniable, breathtaking grace.

"Good," she whispered, her smile turning sharp and confident. "Because the morning ledger review starts in three hours, and we have an entire syndicate to rebuild."
