Chapter 5 - The Purge of San Ángel

Stripping away the remnants of a stolen life. The fallout of Mauricio’s arrest was swift and devastating for the family’s social circle. Within twenty-four hours, the news hit the national headlines: "PROMINENT SAN ÁNGEL BUSINESSMAN ARRESTED FOR PATRICIDE AND FRAUD."
Fernanda, after waking up in the hospital under police guard, was immediately transferred to a holding cell. She tried to deny everything, blaming Mauricio for the drugging attempt and claiming she had no idea about his financial crimes. But the evidence was overwhelming. The forensic audit of their bank accounts proved she had actively helped launder the embezzled funds through various shell boutiques and luxury makeup brands she owned.
With both parents behind bars, the question of Diego’s future arose.
Rosa stood in the middle of the empty San Ángel villa, watching the moving company pack up the last of the furniture. The house had been sold to a private buyer, and the proceeds were legally seized to pay back the embezzled funds to her late husband’s former business partners, with the remainder going safely into Rosa's retirement fund.
Diego, now staying temporarily with a social worker, was brought to the house to see his grandmother one last time before his custody hearing. The eight-year-old boy was no longer the arrogant, violent child who had slapped her. He looked small, terrified, and completely stripped of his spoiled attitude.
He looked at Rosa, his eyes filled with tears. "Grandma... are you going to send me away? I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I hit you."
Rosa walked over and knelt down to his eye level. She did not hug him immediately; she wanted him to understand the gravity of everything that had happened.
"Diego," Rosa said gently but firmly. "What you did to me was very wrong. But it wasn't just your fault. You were raised by monsters who taught you that money makes you superior, and that cruelty is a sign of strength. They lied to you. Strength is about kindness, respect, and honesty."
"I don't want to be like them," Diego sobbed, burying his face in his hands. "Please don't leave me."
Rosa sighed, her heart softening just a fraction. "I will not abandon you, Diego. But you cannot stay with me right now. You need professional help, and you need to learn how to live a normal, humble life. I have arranged for you to live with your Aunt Sofia in Guadalajara. She is a schoolteacher. She has a small house, and her children walk to school. There are no chauffeurs, no country clubs, and no luxury toys. You will work hard, you will respect your elders, and you will learn what it truly means to be a good person."

Diego nodded, wiping his tears. For the first time in his life, he showed genuine humility. "Okay, Grandma. I promise I will try."
As Diego was led to the car to begin his new life, Rosa felt a profound sense of peace. She had saved the boy from becoming the same kind of monster his father was.
