Chapter 6 - The Final Twist

A quiet retirement, a hidden letters, and the ultimate closure.Six months later.
Rosa sat on the terrace of her beautiful apartment in Coyoacán, surrounded by blooming bougainvillea. She was sipping her café de olla, listening to the gentle sounds of the neighborhood.
Mauricio had been sentenced to thirty-five years in prison for his crimes. Fernanda had received a ten-year sentence as an accomplice to fraud and attempted poisoning. Diego was doing well in Guadalajara, writing to Rosa every week, his letters filled with pride about his good grades and his participation in the local community soccer team.
The drama was over. The justice system had done its job.
But there was one final piece of the puzzle that no one else knew about.
Rosa stood up, walked into her study, and opened a small, antique wooden chest that had belonged to her late husband, Roberto. Inside was a hidden compartment.
She pulled out a yellowed letter, written in her husband’s elegant handwriting, dated just one week before his tragic death.
"My dearest Rosa,
If you are reading this, it means I am no longer with you. I have discovered what our son Mauricio has been doing. He has stolen millions, and I fear his greed has turned into something much darker. I saw him browsing through my medical files, asking questions about my penicillin allergy. I know what he is planning.
But I cannot bear to destroy his life myself. I am too weak as a father. I have left all my real assets, my secret accounts, and the proof of his embezzlement in a secure trust under your name. I have also left a digital trail that only you can find when the time is right.
Do not protect him, Rosa. If he goes too far, show him no mercy. Save our family’s soul, even if you have to burn his world down to do it.
With all my love, Roberto."
Rosa closed the letter, a soft smile playing on her lips.
She had not discovered the cloud folder by accident. She had known about Mauricio's guilt for four long years. But she had wanted to give her son a chance to change. She had hoped that the love of his family, his wife, and his child would soften his heart and guide him back to the right path.
It was only when Diego’s hand struck her face, and she saw Mauricio and Fernanda laugh, that she realized the truth: they were already too far gone. They were beyond saving.
Rosa walked over to her small stone fireplace, struck a match, and held it to the corner of her husband’s letter. She watched as the paper caught fire, turning into ash and floating away into the afternoon breeze.
