Chapter 2 - THE BLOODLINE DISCLOSUREThe heavy oak doors of Daniel’s private study slammed shut, sealing us off from the rest of the house. Outside, we could hear the frantic muffled sounds of Marjorie and Grant hurling their clothes into suitcases, screaming at each other in terrified, hushed arguments.

I sat Eli down on the leather sofa with a cup of warm milk and his favorite tablet, putting headphones over his ears so he wouldn't hear what was about to be said. Then, I turned to Arthur Vance, who was pouring two fingers of amber whiskey into a glass at Daniel’s desk.
"Drink this," Vance offered, handing me the glass. "You’re going to need it."
I took a small sip, feeling the burn in my throat. "Stop talking in riddles, Arthur. What did you mean when you said Daniel was killed? The doctors said it was an undetected hypertrophic cardiomyopathy!"
"Doctors can only diagnose what they are trained to look for, Lena," Vance said, sitting down across from me. "Two months ago, Daniel came to my office. He was paranoid, losing weight, and suffering from severe night sweats. He told me he believed he was being poisoned."
My glass trembled. "Poisoned? By whom?"
"He didn't know for sure," Vance explained, pulling a encrypted flash drive from his coat pocket. "But he suspected someone close to him. He secretly took blood samples to an independent toxicology lab in Switzerland. The results arrived yesterday—the day Daniel died."
"And?" My voice was barely a whisper.
"Traces of Polonium-210 and chronic arsenic exposure," Vance said grimly. "It was administered in small, micro-doses over a period of six months. It mimics the natural degradation of heart muscle. Whoever did this executed a flawless, slow-motion assassination."
Tears spilled over my eyelashes. All those nights I watched Daniel toss and turn, sweating through the sheets, crying out in pain while the family doctors told us it was just stress from the company merger. It wasn't stress. Someone was killing my husband right under my nose.
"Who had access to his food? His medicine?" I demanded, my hands clenching into fists.
"That’s for the private investigators to figure out," Vance said. "But there is something even more urgent you need to know, Lena. Daniel’s will wasn't just about protecting his money. It was about protecting Eli’s life."
"Eli?" I glanced over at my little boy, who was blissfully watching a cartoon, totally oblivious to the nightmare surrounding him. "Why would anyone hurt Eli?"
"Because of the true nature of Vale Enterprises," Vance leaned in closer, dropping his voice to a dangerous whisper. "You thought Daniel’s father founded the company through real estate. That was just a front. Vale Enterprises controls a 30% stake in Titan Global Solutions—a defense contractor holding classified military logistics contracts worth billions. But according to Titan’s founding charter, ownership shares can only be inherited by direct, biological male descendants of the Vale bloodline."
The room seemed to spin. "Okay... so Eli is Daniel’s son! He inherits the shares!"
Vance hesitated, a heavy, agonizing pause that made my blood run cold.
"Arthur... why are you looking at me like that?"
"Lena..." Vance began carefully. "Three days before Daniel slipped into a coma, he received a thick envelope in the mail. Inside was a certified DNA test result comparing his DNA with Eli’s."
My heart stopped dead in my chest. "What? That’s impossible! I have never been with another man! Daniel is Eli’s father!"
"I know that, Lena," Vance said softly. "And deep down, Daniel knew it too. But the DNA test result sent to him... claimed a 0% genetic match."
I stood up so fast my chair topped backward, clattering onto the floor. "That’s a lie! A total, disgusting lie! Someone fabricated it!"
"Of course it was fabricated!" Vance barked softly, reaching out to calm me down. "Whoever forged that test was trying to break Daniel’s spirit before he died! They wanted him to cut Eli out of the will at the last second! If Eli was proven not to be a biological Vale, the $4 billion stake in Titan Global would automatically default to..."
Vance stopped. The realization hit me like a freight train.
"Grant," I gasped. "Grant is the next male descendant in line."
"Precisely," Vance said. "If Eli is disqualified, Grant becomes the sole voting member of Titan Global. And Grant is deeply in debt to a syndicate that would pay handsomely to get their hands on those defense contracts."
Suddenly, a sharp thud echoed from the hallway outside the study, followed by the sound of a window shattering on the ground floor.
Vance instantly pulled a sleek, silver semi-automatic handgun from inside his jacket. "Stay behind me," he ordered.

The door to the study burst open. But it wasn't Grant or Marjorie.
It was two men dressed in black tactical gear, their faces hidden behind balaclavas, wielding silenced pistols pointed straight at my chest.
