Chapter 8 - THE LAST SURPRISEThe static died, leaving an eerie, suffocating silence inside the armored van. The rain hammered against the roof like a thousand tiny gunshots.

I sat frozen, holding Eli so tightly he whimpered softly.

"Lena?" Vance asked, seeing the color drain entirely from my face. "What happened? What did you hear?"

"It wasn't Victor..." I whispered, my voice trembling so violently I could barely speak. "The Obsidian Group... Victor was just a pawn. They know who Eli is."

Katya slammed the van into gear, her face hardening into stone. "We need to get out of the state right now. I have a safehouse in Montana, off the grid—"

"No," I cut her off, my voice dropping into a register so dark and cold that even Vance shivered. "No more running. No more safehouses."

"Lena, you heard the threat!" Vance urged. "If there's someone above Victor, they have resources beyond anything we can imagine!"

"Then let them come," I said, reaching down to open the manila envelope Daniel had left in the vault—the secondary dossier we hadn't read yet.

I pulled out a thick stack of photos and personal letters dated from seven years ago—long before Daniel and I even got married.

As I flipped through the photos, my heart stopped.

The photos showed Daniel standing on a sun-drenched yacht in the Mediterranean. Standing right beside him, arms draped over each other's shoulders like brothers, was a young, dashing man with sharp green eyes and a familiar smile.

On the back of the photo, written in Daniel's handwriting: 'Me and Julian. The true architect of Titan Global.'

"Julian..." I gasped.

Vance leaned over my shoulder to look at the photo. His jaw dropped in utter, unadulterated disbelief. "Julian Vance-Cross... Daniel’s twin brother."

"Twin brother?!" I yelled, looking at Vance. "Daniel never had a twin! Marjorie only had Daniel and Grant!"

"That's what Marjorie told the world," Vance stammered, his eyes wide with horror as memories from twenty-five years ago resurfaced. "Thirty years ago, Marjorie gave birth to twins. But Victor... Victor believed that having two heirs would split the bloodline and create weak competition. So he faked the death of the second twin, Julian, and raised him in total secrecy overseas to become the ultimate shadow operative of Titan Global!"

I stared at the photo. The man standing next to Daniel wasn't just his twin. He was the spitting image of my late husband.

Everything clicked. Every strange phone call Daniel took in the middle of the night. His sudden bouts of paranoia. His mysterious trips to Europe.

It was never Daniel running Titan Global alone. It was Julian.

And then, my phone rang.

It was an unknown, encrypted number.

My hand shook as I pressed the screen and brought the phone to my ear.

"Hello, Lena," a voice spoke through the speaker.

The voice was identical to my dead husband’s. It was Daniel’s voice—pitch for pitch, tone for tone.

I squeezed my eyes shut, fresh tears burning my skin. "Julian...?"

A low, melancholic laugh echoed through the line. "Julian? Is that what Vance told you?"

I froze. "What?"

"My dear Lena..." the voice sighed gently, filled with that familiar, warm affection that used to make my heart melt every morning. "Did you really think a few micro-doses of arsenic could kill me?"

My breath hitched in my throat. I couldn't move. I couldn't speak.

"D-Daniel...?" I whispered, my phone practically slipping from my sweaty palm.

"I had to fake my death, Lena," Daniel’s voice said softly through the speaker. "It was the only way to force my father and Marjorie out of the shadows. I had to let them think they won. I had to let them poison a body double—my long-lost brother, Julian, who tried to steal my life three years ago."

I sat in absolute shock, my brain struggling to process the horrifying sanity of his words. "You... you let your twin brother die in your place?! You let me bury him today?!"

"Julian was a monster, Lena," Daniel said coldly. "He was the true leader of the Obsidian Group. He was going to kill you and Eli to take my place. So I gave him what he deserved. I slipped the poison into his drink weeks ago, made him look like me, and let my parents put him in the ground."

"You used me..." I sobbed, rage and terror tearing through my chest. "You used our son! You let Marjorie hit Eli! You let us go through hell tonight!"

"I did what I had to do to protect our bloodline, Lena," Daniel replied smoothly. "Now, my father is in prison. My mother and brother are ruined. The Obsidian Group is destroyed. The empire is entirely ours. Look out the window, my love."

I slowly turned my head toward the rain-slicked street outside the van.

Parked at the end of the dark alley, illuminated by the dim streetlights, was a pristine silver sports car.

The driver's door opened.

A tall man stepped out into the pouring rain, wearing a long black trench coat. He pulled down his umbrella, revealing his face under the streetlight.

It was Daniel. Alive. Unharmed.

He smiled down at his phone, looking straight through the glass of our van at me.

"Come home, Lena," Daniel said softly into my ear cuff. "The house is finally ours."

I looked at my six-year-old son sleeping peacefully in my lap. Then, I looked at the man standing in the rain—the man I had loved, the man I had grieved, and the man who had orchestrated the most ruthless, bloodthirsty game of deception the world had ever seen.

I reached into Katya's glove compartment, pulled out her spare loaded handgun, and racked the slide back with a sharp, lethal CLICK.

"Katya," I said, my voice dead and devoid of fear. "Unlock the door."

I looked out at Daniel, my eyes narrowing into slits of pure, unyielding steel.

"I'm coming out, Daniel," I whispered into the phone. "And God help you."
