Chapter 9 - THE UNWOUND EMPIRETwo weeks after the arrests, the liquidation of Apex Medical Research and Marcus Vance’s personal assets began under federal receivership.

Arthur sat in his modest hardware store for the first time in weeks, surrounded by the familiar scent of cedarwood, WD-40, and metal shavings. The front bell chimed, and Frank walked in carrying a thick manila folder stamped with the seal of the U.S. District Court.
"Morning, Art," Frank said, tossing the folder onto the front counter. "The federal magistrate just signed off on the asset restitution order."
Arthur opened the folder, running his thumb over the official documents. "How much?"
"Every single penny Marcus stole from you, plus interest, plus punitive damages seized from his offshore accounts," Frank smiled, leaning against the counter. "Total recovery is just over two million dollars."
Arthur let out a long breath, staring out the front window at the street where Marcus’s truck used to park. "I don't want the money for myself, Frank. I want to set up a trust fund for Leo's education, and donate the rest to a foundation supporting victims of financial abuse and family fraud."
"That sounds like something Evelyn would have done," Frank said gently.
"Speaking of Evelyn..." Arthur reached under the counter and pulled out a brand-new, polished brass urn—empty, clean, and waiting. "The county coroner finally released Claire’s actual remains from the cold case files they recovered from the corrupt examiner Marcus paid off six years ago."
Frank’s expression softened. "So she really was in that accident years before?"
"No," Arthur said softly, opening the lid of the new urn. "The car crash was real, but Claire wasn't in it. The body they pulled out back then belonged to an unclaimed Jane Doe from a state hospital three counties over. Marcus had already planned the whole thing months in advance. But they found Claire’s actual medical records, dental charts, and personal belongings hidden in a safe deposit box Marcus kept under an alias."
Arthur picked up a small velvet pouch containing a modest, genuine portion of ashes—verified by independent federal DNA testing—and poured them gently into the new brass urn.

The sound was soft, dignified, and real.
"She’s finally home," Arthur whispered, securing the lid.
