Chapter 2 - Under the Dust and ShadowsThe space beneath the old wooden bed frame was a claustrophobic maze of dust bunnies, discarded storage boxes, and old textbooks from her nursing school days.

As Elena squeezed herself flat against the hardwood floor, pulling the dusty plaid dust ruffle down to conceal their entry, Lucian slid in beside her. Because the space was narrow, his broad shoulder pressed firmly against her side, radiating an unnatural, feverish heat.

The scent of him—rainwater, iron, expensive cologne, and fresh blood—filled her senses.

“Don't breathe through your mouth,” he whispered right against her ear, his breath warm on her skin. “If they use thermal or acoustic sweeps, we need to stay synchronized.”

“Shut up,” she muttered back, her heart hammering so loudly she was certain the men outside would hear it through the floorboards.

A heavy metallic click echoed from the outer door.

Followed by the scrape of steel against wood.

They didn't knock this time.

The deadbolt didn't hold against professional breaching tools. With a sharp, splintering crack, the front door of apartment 3B swung violently inward, slamming against the living room wall with enough force to shatter the drywall.

Heavy boots stomped onto the floorboards.

Elena squeezed her eyes shut, her hand instinctively reaching out in the dark until her fingers brushed against Lucian’s calloused hand. Without hesitation, he interlaced his fingers with hers, grounding her, anchoring her terror into a cold, tactical focus.

“Clear the kitchen!” a harsh, gravelly voice barked.

“Bathroom's empty, but there’s surgical gear on the counter,” another voice called out, sounding entirely too close for comfort. “Someone was here recently. The instruments haven't even finished air-drying.”

“Find him. He couldn’t have vanished into thin air. The perimeter team said no one came out the windows.”

Heavy footsteps moved toward the bedroom.

The floorboards groaned under the weight of a man walking right beside the bed. The hem of a dark tactical trouser leg came into view beneath the edge of the plaid dust ruffle. The man stopped, his boots standing not six inches from Elena’s face.

A flashlight beam cut through the darkness beneath the bed, sweeping across the storage boxes, illuminating floating dust motes, and gliding terrifyingly close to Lucian’s polished leather shoes.

Elena stopped breathing entirely. Her lungs burned. Every instinct screamed at her to bolt, to fight, to tear the bed frame apart.

Lucian’s thumb gently stroked the back of her hand in a slow, steady rhythm, calming her racing pulse through sheer willpower.

Above them, the flashlight clicked off.

“Nothing under here,” the man grunted, turning away. “Check the closets.”

The heavy footsteps retreated toward the hallway. A moment later, the front door was pulled shut, leaving behind the splintered frame and a chilling silence.

They stayed motionless for five agonizing minutes.

Finally, Lucian let out a long, slow breath. He shifted slightly, releasing her hand, and began to crawl backward out from under the bed.

“They’re gone,” he whispered, rising to a crouch and stretching his aching torso. “For now.”

Elena crawled out after him, brushing dust from her knees, her face flushed with a mixture of adrenaline and cold fury. She marched straight to the shattered front door, staring at the ruined wood and broken latch.

“My apartment is destroyed,” she said, her voice shaking slightly. “My door is broken. Men are hunting you, and now they know someone helped you.”

Lucian stepped up behind her, looking at the damage with an expression of cold calculation.

“Which means staying here is a death sentence,” he said plainly. He pulled the encrypted burner phone from his pocket and pressed a single button. The screen flickered to life, casting a cold blue glow across his face. “We need to move. Pack a bag. Minimal weight. We’re leaving in five minutes.”

Elena turned around, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.

“And why, Mr. Moretti, should I go anywhere with you? Why shouldn't I just call the police—real police, from out of county—and tell them a wounded mafia boss just hijacked my apartment?”

Lucian’s gaze locked onto hers, heavy with a warning that sent a shiver straight down her spine.

“Because,” he said quietly, “the men who broke in tonight didn't work for the syndicate. They work for the North River Police Department’s Internal Affairs division. Led by a man named Detective Garrett Hale.”

Elena’s blood ran completely ice cold.
