Chapter 9 - CheckmateGarrett froze in the center of the courtyard, his hand flying to his ear as his eyes darted frantically toward the surrounding cliffs.

“Elena?” His voice crackled over the radio frequency, thin and sharp with disbelief. “What the hell is this? You’re dead. You were supposed to be buried three hundred miles away!”

“Surprise, Garrett,” Elena’s voice came back, calm, steady, and utterly devoid of fear. “Turns out badge-wielding cowards aren't very good at finishing what they start.”

“Where are you?!” Garrett roared, losing his composure completely as his men scrambled for cover around him. “If you think you can play games with me—"

“You played games with my life for years,” Elena interrupted, her voice hardening like steel. “You rigged reports, you threatened my friends, you used your badge to terrorize anyone who tried to help me. Well, your badge doesn't work out here, Garrett. And your little cartel friends aren't going to bail you out.”

“Kill the comms trace!” Garrett screamed to his tech specialist behind the van.

“Too late, Detective,” Lucian’s deep, resonant voice cut across the frequency. “The entire conversation—including your financial ledger, your operational commands, and your direct ties to the syndicate—has already been uploaded to every federal news desk, internal affairs server, and wire service from here to Washington.”

Garrett went completely pale. The gun in his hand trembled slightly.

“You... you hacked the core server?”

“No,” Lucian replied smoothly. “We just gave your masters a reason to throw you under the bus before you could take them down with you. Look behind you, Detective.”

Garrett slowly turned around.

The front door of the stone cottage wasn't the only way out. From the rocky path leading up from the cliffside dock, two figures emerged into the sunlight.

Lucian stood tall and imposing, holding his rifle casually at his side despite his injuries. And beside him stood Elena, her posture regal, her eyes locked onto Garrett’s with a cold, absolute triumph.

Before Garrett could raise his weapon, a heavy-duty federal drone dropped out of the overcast sky above them, hovering directly over the courtyard with a booming automated voice:

“FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT. DROP YOUR WEAPONS. YOU ARE SURROUNDED.”

From the upper ridge of the gorge, flashing red and blue lights suddenly appeared as multiple unmarked federal vehicles—FBI and State Police anti-corruption units—converged on the trapped tactical vans, their weapons drawn and focused squarely on Garrett’s men.

Garrett stared at the federal agents, then back at Elena. The realization of absolute defeat settled over his face like a shroud.

With a hollow, defeated clatter, his service pistol dropped from his hand and hit the dirt.
