Chapter 14 - The Prison Breakout Scheme

At 2:00 AM inside Topo Chico Penitentiary, smoke suddenly billowed from the laundry facilities. Sirens shrieked through the night air, waking hundreds of inmates into a frenzy.

"Riot in Block C!" a guard screamed into his radio. "Send backup!"

Inside the chaotic corridors, tear gas canisters exploded, filling the hallways with thick white smoke. Inmates slammed against cell bars, screaming and setting mattresses ablaze. In the confusion, three men dressed in tactical guard uniforms moved swiftly down the lower level toward Mateo’s cell.

The heavy steel door unlocked with a sharp metallic clack.

Mateo stepped out, wearing a matching guard uniform and a gas mask. Beside him was Don Hector, who calmly adjusted his tactical vest.

"Everything is set," Don Hector rasped through his mask. "The main power grid for the eastern wall has been disabled by my men on the outside. We have four minutes before the military units arrive."

"What about the warden?" Mateo asked, his eyes gleaming with psychotic anticipation.

"He was paid off an hour ago," Don Hector smirked. "As far as the official state records are concerned, Mateo Garza will die in this riot."

They sprinted through the smoke-filled corridors, stepping over unconscious guards and panicked prisoners. Reaching the laundry loading dock, a heavy iron door was blown off its hinges with a shaped plastic explosive.

Outside, a blacked-out armored transport truck sat idling in the alleyway.

Mateo leaped into the back of the vehicle, tearing off his gas mask. He breathed in the cool night air for the first time in over three years. He reached into a duffel bag inside the truck, pulling out a tailored suit, a loaded semi-automatic pistol, and a fake passport bearing his new identity: Julian Vance—a sick taunt aimed directly at his enemy.

"Where to, boss?" the driver asked.

Mateo chambered a round into his pistol with a lethal click. "To San Pedro. It's time to collect what's mine."
