CHAP 1: The Red Lights of Retribution

The sirens didn’t just approach; they converged. Within ninety seconds, the quiet suburban street was painted in flashing red and blue. The sharp screech of tires echoed outside, followed by the heavy, synchronized thud of boots marching up the driveway.
Victor’s smirk faltered. He glanced toward the window, his brow furrowing as the shadows of multiple armed figures moved across the frosted glass of the front door. "What the hell did you do, Evelyn?" he growled, stepping away from Noah and toward me, his massive frame casting a shadow. "You called the cops over a family matter? Daniel, get your mother-in-law under control."
Daniel looked up, his face pale, but he didn't move. He was too busy staring at the front door.
Instead of a standard police knock, the front door was hit with a hydraulic ram. The frame splintered with a deafening CRACK.
"Police! Nobody move!"
Four tactical officers in unmarked black gear, carrying shields and automatic weapons, flooded the dining room. Behind them stepped a man in a sharp grey suit—Agent Marcus Vance, my former subordinate from the Special Operations Bureau.
Margaret dropped her wineglass. It shattered on the hardwood floor, dark red liquid pooling around her expensive shoes like blood. "What is the meaning of this?!" she shrieked, her voice losing its aristocratic calm. "Do you know who my husband is? He owns Hale Construction! We fund the mayor’s campaign!"
Agent Vance didn't even look at her. He walked straight past Victor, stood in front of me, and gave a crisp, respectful nod. "Director Cross. The perimeter is secure. Medical team is right behind us."
The room went dead silent.
Victor stared at me, his mouth slightly open. "Director... Cross?"
"Noah," I said softly, ignoring Victor entirely. I scooped my sobbing grandson into my arms. "The medics are going to look at your shoulder, okay? You're safe now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."
As two female medics rushed in to tend to Noah and a terrified Claire, Victor finally found his voice. He stepped toward Vance. "Look here, officer, this is a misunderstanding. The kid was being disrespectful, and I—"
"Step back, sir," Vance ordered, his voice cold as ice.
"Do you know who I am?" Victor bellowed, his chest puffing out, reverting to the intimidation tactics that had worked for decades. He reached out to push Vance aside.
It was the last mistake he would make as a free man.
In a fraction of a second, two tactical officers tackled Victor into the very dining table he had been ruling over. The wood groaned and cracked under the weight. Victor roared in rage, struggling against the zip-ties being pulled tight around his thick wrists.
"Claire..." Daniel whimpered, finally standing up. But before he could take a step toward his wife, an officer blocked him.
"Daniel Hale," Vance announced, pulling out a warrant. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, aiding and abetting child abuse, and domestic coercion. And as for you, Mr. and Mrs. Hale..." Vance turned a chilling smile toward Victor and Margaret. "...you're being detained under the National Security Act. We've been looking for the financial elite backing the offshore trafficking networks for five years. Who knew we'd find the paper trail right under Director Cross's nose?"
Margaret’s face turned the color of chalk. She looked at me, her lips trembling. "Evelyn... please... we're family."
I stood by the door, holding my daughter and grandson close. I looked at the woman who had smiled while a child was thrown against a wall.

"Family protects children," I said, my voice dead and flat. "You are just targets."
HOOK FOR CHAP 2: As Victor was dragged out screaming, he leaned close to my ear and whispered five words that turned my blood colder than the winter air: "Daniel isn't the only mole."
